It's been a while. Lost the Russian game when I upgraded to Windows ME, and have since tried Austria (no forced annexation: left me sky high in BB after dipannexing Bavaria, Bohemia, Hungary, and Venice); Turkey (too easy to conquer everything in my path); France (never looked back from first place after attacking a Spain who refused to back their English ally). So it's back to England.
This will be a bare-bones AAR: I've already played a third of the game, and haven't taken any notes. A personal note to Morpheus: this one will make you cringe, as I've only declared war twice, and am not planning to ever do it again.
As with my Violence campaign, my first goal was to dipannex Scotland. This was done without too much difficulty (deny Spain the first time they ask for help). Early on, Spain went to war with Portugal, and took Oporto by treaty. This turned out to be a terrible mistake, as the inevitable rebels then marched around northern Spain, eventually creating an independent Aragon, which joined my alliance with Denmark (I was angling for dominating the North Sea). Spain got to Trade Level 4 quickly enough, and embargoed my merchant, so I declared war on them, took Flanders, and settled for cash. When they did it again, I said enough is enough, and the peace treaty gave Flanders to England, Leon to Aragon, and cash all around.
Meanwhile, during the reign of the Henrys, France declared war on me three times. The first time I torched a TP and took cash. The second time I took a TP in Newfoundland and cash. The third time I took a TP in Barbados and cash. As soon as Denmark converted to Protestant, I did the same. However, no matter how many times I asked, they refused to become my vassal. When Hessen converted to Reformed, I gave Denmark one last chance but they still refused, so I converted again and joined Hessen's alliance with Hannover and Saxony. They had been at war with Spain, and Hessen took Holland while Saxony took Friesland. The plan had been to dip annex the Netherlands, but I really don't think they're ever going to form now (this is something which is handled much better in the board game).
Actually, Saxony was no longer a member of the alliance at this time. After waiting patiently for it to expire, I got to head the renewed alliance, allowing me to vassalize Hessen, Hannover, Saxony, Bohemia, and most recently Brandenburg. The first two, by the way, no longer exist
.
I did get dragged into a war on Bohemia's behalf, when Austria attacked them. As a result of that war, Saxony was forced to return to Romanism, so now I'm counting the days until they come back to the fold. And then Spain, completely unprovoked, attacked me. This was one of the most foolish acts I've ever witnessed, as I think there are only two provinces of theirs in the Americas with any kind of fortification. I was generous in my terms, only demanding 2 stars of cash in early January.
As for the colonial empire, I've concentrated on strategically located colonies being built up into cities. Much of the Atlantic coast of North America, Quebec and Rimorski, Nova Scotia, Nain, Barbados, Cape Town, Calcutta, Mekong, Jakarta, Bali, Brisbane, Vladivostok, and the gold province in California. Pretty much anywhere with tolerant natives, I've been working on. And my explorers (and diplomats
) have discovered every single ocean area and coastal province.
