I've played my first real game after reading the manual and faq and am wondering. If I mind my own business in Rome will these behemoths I see growing in the east eventually come for me? I mean Egypt and the sele's? I'd rather not war monger just to stay alive. I'm enjoying political intrigue alone at the moment.

You can expect the blobs to come for you soon or later, of course. Also the Sels often name themselves the protectors of the Greek world, so they can and will intervene in your attempts to annex the greek minors.

But if you really like intrique you can keep them busy with their own internal problems and help triggering civil wars in their empires.

Just be sure to:
a) Keep their ruler popularity at zero using smearing.
b) Keep their heir apparent popularity zero. This is possible once he hits age of 16, because minors are kinda immune to smearing.
c) Keep the pretenders loyality at zero.
d) Keep their generals loyality at zero.
e) Keep their governors loyality at zero. You should be ready to annex the possible regional country declaring independence here.

This implies you need to conduct intriques almost monthly, of course.

I mean more along the lines of if I don't press into their neighborhood. I'm so enjoying politics and trying to find a ruler who can become dictator that I don't have any real desire to expand. Will they close in/colonise and come for me? Or only be a problem if I go snooping in their neck of the woods?

Also, on a side note. Is there a problem clicking provinces in the game? I try to click to build or make units and I have to click in a certain part of the province, nothing like the EU3 maps.

Usually Egypt wipes out Carthage then comes for Rome from the south and the Seleucids annex the whole Greece and come from the East. They even form alliance sometimes to bash you more effectively.

Minding your own business only means the blobs will mind your business soon too. You have to take some measures on the "world" theatre to ensure your survival.

I went all the way from my native 1920x1200 to...1.1k something by 800 something and it still happened. Tried at all multisample levels, without trees. Even disabled all the advanced nvidia "options" in their driver config panel.

I`ve noticed this as well. I think you`re just going to have to get used to it. Click on the middle of provinces, That was my only solution.

Can't say I've ever had the problem. I have found that the city graphic and the presence of an army makes it slightly harder to click a province, but clicking anywhere else in the province works fine for me.

Nope, for me its so bad sometimes that my mouseover for seeing tooltips in the Omens is off by a whole Omen. For example I'll be on the line for 10% discipline and it'll show me the tooltip for the one above it or below it. Craziness.

Any of you Caesars of the Rome sub-forums know of any addons which are sort of "must have"? Kind of like the DVIP for Deus Vult if you're familiar with it?

I find as Rome that the best defence is as always a good offence.

1) Colonize whenever and whereever you can. Ship grain and goods from your most civilised provinces (rome etc.) to the borders to speed up civilisation rate and pop growth. When a province hits 50 Civ 10 people send out stacks of 1k mercaneries to rile up the neighbouring barbarians, crush them and then colonise further.

2) Steam role over all the Gallic states as soon as possible, alternatively make them pay you tribute to boost their civ rating then cancel and attack just before you lose the free CB.

3a) Smash Carthage out of the Med and Spain and keep them penned in in North Africa. After a war to strip their cores away you can then use them as an ally to help you push east.

3b) Go after Greece early. Take out the tribals in Thracia/Dacia/Dalmatia to stop Macedon do any colonising of its own. Macedon should eat most of the greek minors which reduces the number of DoWs you need.

3b.ii) With luck you should get some civ boosting events in Rome take them to push your civ up to 100%. at this stage you get free dows on most of the Greek minors so you can safely pick them off.

4) Macedonia will prove tricky but after one good war you should be able to leave them with just their capital or two provinces so you can annex them entirely after an easy second war.

5) Start colonising up the black sea coast and take out the bosphorous kingdom and Roxalni to stop anyone else colonising in this direction. Often Pontus becomes quite a major power, once you've secured the northen shore of the Black Sea you can bribe them up to good relations and befriend them again.

At this point all you have to deal with is Barbarians along your long northern border, which will reduce in intensity as you colonise and fortify more provinces. And of course whoever has won the constant Selucid/Egyptian War. Your armies will be bigger than theirs and at that point it is only a matter of time and some WWI style battles of attrition stopping you from going for a world conquest...
