uploading the mind into synths grants every leader immortality, while being the the chosen turns one leader into an immortal (who then can become god emperor)

why doesn't bio ascension lead to some kind of immortality too?

if sophisticated cloning doesn't enable immortality because the individual consciousness is not being transferred to the clone, cloning tissue and organs and replacing old ones with new ones should lead at least to near-immortality

rp wise, i really miss this option because psi immortality is a rather elitist option while synth ascension is classically the birth of a hive mind (see borg), so bio immortality is the only option left for a race of individuals who want to retain their individuality upon ascension

and gameplay wise you need this buff to leader exp anyway; starting as a non-gestalt already puts you at a disadvantage, not being able to gain immortality by other means handicaps you even more

As long as you keep up with research, leaders are practically immortal already. It's very possible to keep the leader age ahead of the death age indefinitely.
So I don't think a "formal" immortality is really required right now, and to be honest, I find it quite boring when every option gets the same thing, just in a different flavor.

Plus, I'd argue that Synth Ascension is very clearly not themed as the "birth of a hive mind", since pops keep their ethics, factions continue existing, happiness is still a thing, as is everything else that signals individuality.

yeah, it's not fun though seeing the ruler you named after yourself die shortly after the end-game begins, and this is with having 4 points wasted on venerable and all the other +life span stuff

If played properly that shouldn't really happen though, since there is a +5 years lifespan repeatable in the society branch. Getting the "free" early bonuses and then one level of repeatables every 5 years is not all that difficult with standard settings if your empire has an appropriate size. And even if you stop adding more science in preparation for a buildup to defeat the endgame crisis at some point, it will take quite a while for tech prices to become too high for this to be sustainable and for the death timer to catch up.

In a way, I actually find it kind of fitting that Bio Ascension has to constantly "push the envelop" to keep its leaders alive, since they essentially get the best of all three ascension paths, but have to constantly invest to keep it. Psionic in comparison has very limited, but near-failproof immortality. (edit: Well, except they can of course also just push the age forward through tech, so this argument is not as clean as I initially though... but still) And Synths have "free" immortality, but it will malfunction every now and then. That seems pretty fair to me, three different systems with advantages and downsides.

I guess if we ever get a tech overhaul where it's not as easy to push into high repeatables anymore the current balance will break down, but right now I don't really see the need for change.

My oldest bio-leader died at the age of 270.
With Xeno-Compatibility, you can get a Lithoid (+50years ) with cybernetics (+40), robust (+50), irradiated (+30) and venerable (+80) and keep going even longer, but that takes a bit of luck.

not around 2400, while still having other stuff to spend society research on or modify species

That does require not using auto-research for society though. I've learned through experience that the AI can't keep my lifespans topped up.

Edit: An alternative solution would be capping the lifespan repeatables and adding an ascension perk for biological immortality. That makes it an investment instead of something every empire gets. Perhaps with a pop growth speed bonus and/or reduction in amenities use, since your pops aren't dying or requiring care for the aging anymore.

With Bio Ascension you can make some long lasting leaders, so you will not see many deaths till 2500
I am fine with Bio Ascend not being literally immportal as long as they get something. I am fine with Psionics having just better leaders, deal with it.

I like idea of cloning leaders, you create copy of leader who is level 1 but have all traits of the old one. That would be fun and unique.
Or some gimmick society project, your current supreme leader is named Horacio and is cloned, when they would die they just loose XP instead, a new clone takes place of old one but keeps name traits and everything.

Other ideas
Lower the cost of maintainance Cloning vast to like 20f so it will be better than robot assembly. Or at least not worse.

Introduce some extra ascendet traits like
Four Armed, +20% resources but only on physical jobs (so metaulrgist, miners but not scientis), +40% army strenght
Pheromones +30% Trade Value, +30% Ammenity production
possibly more
Generally if your manually craft perfect worker you can get some good results, not just derp synth.
