So first play through with utopia. Went robot. Which i think are awesome. Sadly i went into synthetic with a leader that had -20% fleet cap. This wouldnt be a huge issue except i had government type that they rule till death. You can see where this is headed.

The only way to change leaders is to reform to an elected leader type gov then force election then hope your rng is good for leader traits then elect then switch back to rule till death. Which is 750 influence. 2x gov reform, 1x elect.

I started a new game as a hive mind, i didnt get far into it but it seems the same unless im told otherwise. Hivemind could be worse as you cant change gov types.

Once you hit immortal leader(s) or start with hivemind you should be able to pick your traits simikiar to how you pick your species traits.

Or am i missing something?

The risk of getting stuck with a bad leader should be a downside of imperial/autocratic authority. If you want to change rulers you should use or transition to a government form that can.

You people are missing the point entirely.

There is no choice when A) being a hivemind and B) There is an oversight when having rule to death type governments and becoming immortal. Yes you can yolo the system and spend 750 influence to change leaders and gov types but thats just gaming the system. There should be something else. As a sythetic i should be able to pick and choose what traits(programs) i want to run with as a leader. There should be a trait list similiar to species traits that pop when going synthetic. The current system just makes it so there is no choice at all unless you work the system and change gov types back ad forth over and over. That just seems broken as hell.

Because throughout history, monarchies and dictatorships have never had incompetent people in charge?

Actually, I can only imagine that what you are describing is a likely outcome with immortal rulers in real life. You end up with a someone in charge who is just smart enough to avoid assassination or removal from power, but who isn't that bright.

I don't see a problem with this at all. If you don't want to be run by immortal incompetents, pick a government type that shuffles the deck. Heck, with the way ruler bonuses work, even a ruler with good traits may not be best for the entire game. Having the option to swap to a leader with a more situation-specific trait set sounds like better gameplay to me.

EDIT: That being said, there should be events that allow for assassination of rulers. Even Leto II got assassinated, and he was a human-sandworm immortal future seeing god emperor.

If there's going to be a way to change your immortal (or long term) leader then it needs to come with a fairly significant downside, like in EUIVif you want to get rid of Sir Idiot McUselesspants.

Actually this could be a good idea. You could have it so you spend a resource of some type (unity, inluence energy) and every few years you could swap a ruler trait. There would need to be a certain amount of nuance to it if course but for some governments etc it might well fit.
