Yeah, in the FAQ it looks like immigration will have people moving from overpopulated cities to new colonies and new countries. Does that mean no more sending colonists to where you want, they just go there automatically??

Man I hope so...I would hate to see the Italian player sending all his immigrants to Italian Somaliland instead of them heading over to New York like in reality.

Well, a lot would depend on choices of USA player, and how aggressive Sardinia/Italy is in colonialism (which should be very little)

I'm guessing immigration will be a combination of event-driven, and perhaps some automatic.

In real life there were a couple of immigration waves from Europe to the U.S. in the 1860s and 1880s. It largely depended on the respective economies of Europe vs. the U.S. Also, there were many different targets for European emigrants, like South America, South Africa, Algeria (1.5 million French during this time period!), Australia and others.

Emigration should benefit colonies first and foremost (as with England and France). For countries with no colonies, emigration would be largely to independent non-European countries. This is a gross simplification though, the real picture was very complex and included a lot of factors.

Agreed the specific countries would get an immigration bonus but it should also be possible for the immigrants to go elsewhere... Maybe in this game you only establish buildings in the place you want your colony to be and then the immigrants go there by themselves? Like an automatic process. or maybe you can send colonists first and then more immigrants join... I want this game now!

Am I the only one who killed all the natives before colonizing?

'Prosperity' and labour demand of the 'empty' countries and colonies compared to Europe's overpopulation as well as ethnicity will probably determine the migratory currents from Europe to the Americas and colonies. I'd like to see an ability for the European countries to invest more in welfare to diminish those emmigrants.

I'd also like to see the 'Immigration Offices' working. I'm not sure about the US, but Argentina and I think Uruguay had 'Immigration Offices' where they gave applicants for migration to Argentina/Uruguay the ticket on the ship (3rd or 2nd Class tickets depending on their social class (the passage was afforded for them by the government).

I'm hoping you can do certain things to make colonizing the "frontier" in frontier nations much more pleasing. Such as building the trans-Siberian railway, maybe giving colonists certain incentives to move, much as the US did by giving land to people who moved west, or as Russia did where the early settlers of Siberia had much more freedom than their European counter-parts. There's just so much land and resources out there in Siberia, and we need people, i'd like to do everything in my power to get them moving.

... Or maybe we could be exceptionally evil, and force movements of people. Pull a Stalin and have entire ethnic groups uprooted and sprinkled throughout Central Asia and Siberia!

i do not believe that italian emigration ever started from the overpopulated cities.
i do not know how it is for the other countries, but the italian case show that emigration was from the countries to the towns.
the first thing is that people who could, even making sacrificies, stay, didn't start. then, people started for the city that had the best in the balance of job offering, being near and not being populated by known percieved "enemies".
thus, its most likely that you won't see great migrations between european countries: irish people will go us.
another thing: someone in the thread spoke of french emigration to algeria: that was after 1870 war was fought, II empire was gone and alsazia and lorena were given to germany.

thanks.
