1.08

I have no problems with tech in 1.08, easily reaching high levels by the mid 1700s. I don't have Swiss cheese Europe, either, in most games. Sure, in my current game, Spain has been carved up by Portugal, Baden, Netherlands and France but most of the continent is contiguous territory.

My complaint is that by allowing you to lower your tolerance of your state religion to the same level as other religions, 1.08 makes religious revolt very unlikely unless you are going through a long war. What was the justification for this change, anyway? It offers an easy out for both the player and AI when the Reformation comes. If I have six Protestant provinces but don't want to go through the trouble of converting, I can lower my Catholic tolerance to the level of Protestant (or lower?). In my current game, half of France's National Provinces are Protestant, but no signs of an impending Huguenot rebellion.

Still a great game, but religion, which was a significant issue in 1.07 has been neutered in 1.08.

Grumbold, you are right that when you had three religions in 1.07 it relatively easy to juggle your tolerance but by forcing you to keep your state religious tolerance above a certain level you were operating in a truly limited range.

But playing 1.08 as Turkey I have Shia, Sunni, Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox - five religions. I could follow Altuar's recommendation and force myself to keep state religion maxed, but if the AI is not playing by the same rules regarding religion my role-playing is a little hampered.

I guess I would like religious tolerance to mean something. By having the ability to lower state religion tolerance, I am able to play Turkey like a twentieth century secular republic - state religion means nothing, all lip service. I remember having more religious problems as England in 1.07 than I have as Turkey in 1.08.

Don't get me wrong. It doesn't "ruin" the game, but if it promises that religious choices are important I want some important decisions to make. It's still (by far) the best game to deal with this subject, I just think that 1.08 has watered down religious tolerance a little much.

Bib: How many of those revolts are religious revolts and how much are nationalist revolts? Turkey has national provinces all the way to Vienna and there is no significant nationalism in the Muslim world. I suspect that when Austria starts grabbing Orthodox provinces, nationalism will be your big problem.

Could it just be my experience with Turkey?
