Well I just discovered, by complete accident, that the amount of territory you can colonize is not limited by your colonist count. Having played this game from launch, spent countless hours on the EU4 wiki, and read more EU4 AARs than I care to remember, I just NOW (at the end of 2014) realized that hitting the "recall" button on a colony-under-construction does not abandon the colony itself. And I was wondering how it could be even remotely possible to play a historic Spanish colonial game with only 2-3 colonists available. I think I'm the biggest idiot in the history of this game.

Hahahahaha this is brilliant!

But remember that if you go above your colonist limit, the cost of sustaining these colonies will grow exponentially the more you have. I'm currently playing a game as Hawaii (not a vanilla tag, using a mod) but I am so poor I can only colonize one province at a time even though I have 2 colonists :( It pains me SO MUCH to see that unused colonist sitting there doing nothing it makes my bleeding eyes bleed!

It doesn't grow "exponentially," it grows quadratically....

lolol

Spain can probably handle 10 concurrent colonies in 1.8. Unfortunately, it takes ~40 year longer to get to 5 colonists than it did in 1.6, but by the late 16th century you should pull in enough of 1.8's absurd trade wealth to handle at least 3 colonies above your limit.

Before 1.8 patch you couldn't really sustain more than 1 extra colony above limit. Especially at the beginning. Later when your economy and trade is developed you could.

1.8 your swimming with money so you can go like 3 above the colonist limit and still be in the green with army at full maintenance.

So you haven't really missed out on much.

in my game when I'm sending colonists over to Indonesia and it takes 2 years to get there i just leave them to boost growth. though i could afford it i guess i am making "only" 500 a month. i do basically own all the trade from Indonesia and going to the cape though as well as the English channel so its to be expected i guess. it might be a bit high though i have 20k stored away and give out 1000 ducket gifts to nations i want to support and have to keep building every building i can just to have it all be useful.

Well I`m finishing my portugal "colonize-all-the-americas" game and with 400-560 ducats from trade only I am able to sustain 3 +3 advisors, about 80k mostly mercenaries army and 8-15 colonies. With 15 colonies I`ve got about -800 per month but with ~80k in bank thats not a problem. Anyway colonisation is now rather easy, altough I didn`t play "colonizers/traders" before so I tought that much cash is normal for them ^^

Lol. Don't worry bro. That's what happened to me until I watched one of Arumba's videos.
