Hey, I've been playing EU2 a lot, but are completely new to HoI...

Since the games' tutorial has some bugs, it would be nice to get some tips from experienced players...

Which nation should I start with, to learn the basics of the game..?
Although I've played EU2 a lot, the diversity anf comprehensiveness of HoI caught be by surprise... There seems to be a LOT to do, a lot of different data to digest...

I suppose that the first campaign (36-46) is the best place to start?
My game is the newest patch (which I downloaded as soon as I got the game)

I need some tips, mostly about the basics of the game.. - how to get started

thanks in advance

I have these golden tips for you:
1) Read the FAQs.

the FAQs are in the stickies at the top of this forum. most ppl start with Germany in 1936 and just plod along scoping things out. in my first game, i had almost 99.999 of three of the four resources when i went to war, i think in 1938. but to do that, i always kept the provinces on build IC and did a lot of 100 for 100 trades on the world resources market.

so, load up the game, and poke your nose into anything that shows up!

Wellcome Mhusoy,

I'd recomend that if you want to jump straight into the fighting, you should pick Germany '39. You'll be right in the middle of it.

If you want to get the hang of the game before major combat is joined, I'd sugest that you try the US '36. As America you will have the luxury of time, manpower, and resources which are a great boon to any general. Your strong economy will afford you plenty of Industrial Capacity (IC) to both research technologies, and then build your armies.

Tips:

- Study your ledgers often (f6)
- Trade in the world market for any resource you lack.
- Use the province finder (\), and click on the minimap for rapid map viewing.
- Research from the top down. Find what you want, then click back on the "required" techs/apps to find what/when to research.
- Never put your Consumer Goods (CGs) slider in the red.
- Learn convoys and supply before combat.
- Your forces are only as fast as the slowest member. Be mindful when grouping units.
- Destroying the enemy is your main goal, not just capturing land. Constantly seek to encircle your foes and collapse pockets, rather than pushing them back.

Enjoy and good luck.

If you play 1936 Germany historically, wait for the historic events to occur before going to war. You can look at the events in your HOI folder [ db/events/germany ].

The major ones are the Spanish Civil War (support Nationalists) July 1936, Austrian Anschluss March 1938, Sudentenland (Munich crisis) 30 Sep 38, the end of Czechoslovakia (spring 1939), and finally war over the Danzig crisis 30 Aug 1939. Note that the minor powers Austria Czech. and Poland can choose different responses than what historically happened.

The other major change from EU2 is that this is primarily not a diplomatic game. As Germany you might not use any diplomatic points at all until after conquering Poland when you can start looking for allies. Germany basically gets allies by winning and conquering and then influencing others towards Fascism.

If you have allies, there is one very important rule: if you move from an ally's territory with your troops and conquer another province, that province goes to your ally not to you.

Also there are no diplomatic options to hash out a piecemeal peace treaty which was the norm in EU2. In HOI it's total war except for two events: Germany and France can agree to set up Vichy France while Germany and Russia can agree to the Bitter Peace (a hypothetical event where Germany surrenders most territory west of the Urals). You should be able to search for Bitter Peace or Vichy to get a better understanding of those events.

Download the updated manual (sticky for the manual project) above these general questions if you did not buy the new Platinum edition. And download all the FAQs. Fiendix's Leader Effects FAQ must be reviewed before getting into combat.

Bitter Peace is Russia surrenders most territory west of the Urals.

Note also that if you play Germany in the 1936 scenario, you gain essential land and air doctrines from the prewar events; short-circuiting these events by declaring war prior to the historical date will cause your technological research costs to rise dramatically because you will then need to research these doctrines instead of getting them for free. Naval doctrines and regular technologies are not given, so I usually focus research prior to those events on those areas (so you don't research something you can get later for free.)

Also, Japan 1936 has a quirk to it - you need to elect a right-wing government before you can declare wars. The historic event for this is the early 1937 election, but I beluieve there's a second chance around 1940. Simply choose "Elect Right" when you get an election event.

The best tip that I can give is: Do not start playing the game past 6pm. You will not get to bed until 2am! ! ! This is bad if you have to work the next day.

And even worse when you have a girlfriend or wife waiting for you (just 5 more minutes, Dear....)

This is actually the best newbie tip I have read so far ;)
