ive had this game since it first came out and have tried several times to get into it but always give up after a few days. whats the patch situation with the game and what are the best mods to have?

1.04 has been delayed until January 2006. So current patch is 1.03C

Regarding mods, I'm biased but if you were to try VIP I would recommend becoming comfortable with the game in 1.03C first before jumping into VIP 0.4B because it does represent a major jump in game difficulty due to the increased amount of events and changes in the economy.

I am not trying to be argumentative. Heaven forbid! :)

I have personally found 1.03c with Darkrenown's All in one mod applied to be more satisfying in a game play sort of way. VIP is a great mod, and I would never, ever say anything against it, but I personally prefer the freedom to colonize ahistorically in an attempt to bring some of the minor powers up to great power status.

That being said, I do have several Vicky directories and shortcuts on my laptop allowing to play vanilla 1.03c, the All in One mod, or VIP .4b, depending on the whim that overtakes me at any particular moment. :D That's the great thing about Vicky! With so many mods to choose from, it's like having about 5 different games from only one source CD! I first installed the game back on October 7th, and I've still not even looked at a quarter of the mods and scenarios available.

(You would think that I would get some reward for this kind of sucking up, but NO!, I have to go and do it for FREE!)

i would prefer to colonize with freedom as well. how do these mods differ?

With VIP 0.4B, colonization in Africa is banned for all major nations until January 1879 (or later for some nations not historically colonizers). In Asia and the Pacific a few nations get a bit of a head start but otherwise 1879 is the start date as well.

The goal was to prevent ahisorical AI colonization - like Russians in the Congo and Americans in Mauritania - and to better capture the "scramble" aspect of colonization in Africa and the South Pacific in the late 19th Century, which I think the bans allow very well.

how do the bans work? and how would i know what nations couldnt colonize?
im assuming all is explained in the read me

Basically in your diplomatic window it will say something like "Colonization of Africa banned by (name of your country) until 2 January 1879" or whatever date it is.

The list of countries and continents and when the ban dates lift are all in the .eug file for VIP.

Well if you give 1.03C another go and don't like it, why not try again in January (we hope) with 1.04.

Actually, in some respects it is easier for minor powers to colonise in VIP, because by 1879 you can get the money together to do so. In vanilla by the time you have enough money the major powers have usually beaten you to the punch.

I love VIP and I love the colonization ban :)

But just play vanilla to get the ropes first, any country will do, but expect to struggle at first if you havent played much or havent played in a long while. There's a lot of micromanaging that has to occur for things to go smoothly.

I, too, was not happy with the game at first. However, even if you can't find a mod out there that you're happy with, there is always the possibility of modding the game yourself :^D
