In a recent game playing as England I came across what I think is the worst example of something which I think is probably WAD but really shouldn't be.

I had recently captured the County of Teviotdale from Scotland for one of my vassals and so now had a truce to run down before I could pursue my own Ducal Claim for the County of Lothian. However, at this point the County of Lothian decided to declare independence from Scotland (a suicidal move for a single county with no allies to call into the war but that is a separate issue).

I took advantage of this to declare war on Lothian to enforce my Ducal Claim and managed to get my levies to the County before any Scottish troops meaning that I was the siege leader. At this point, with all of their troops lying dead on the battlefields and large armies laying siege to the County it would have been sensible for Lothian to surrender to one of us - either to me to escape from Scottish rule and join someone sharing his Saxon culture or to surrender to Scotland to escape from my invasion - but he didn't do this (again, a different AI issue), instead he let the war continue.

So now we come to my bug. I decided that I didn't want to wait for the siege to end naturally because this would increase the chance of surrender to Scotland so I assaulted the holdings one at a time until I could get to 100% war score and enforce surrender for myself. The part that makes no sense at all here is that when I ordered an assault the Scottish troops joined my assault and effectively helped me win my war at the expense of their own. They were not my ally so I don't think they should have joined my assault. They should have looked on and laughed as my levies died storming the holdings and once I was too weak to completely take the County they would have taken over and stormed the remaining holdings for themselves.

There is also a (third) side issue here in that the King of Scotland should have some way to warn me that he considers Lothian to be part of his Kingdom and that he will consider me to be at war with him (in breach of my truce) if I do not abandon my war with Lothian. This would be similar to my ability to declare war on a Muslim nation that is attacking one of my rebellious regions before I arrive to put down the rebellion myself (although I also wish I could use that CB without having to dismiss and re-raise my levies).

So, to summarise, this report raises the following issues:

1. Non allied forces occupying the same County join each other in a siege. This might be logical in some circumstances (Crusades, perhaps) but not generally.

2. You should have an option to declare a defensive war on any nation (whether of your religion or not) who declares war on a rebellious part of your realm and this CB should not require you to have no raised levies since you are likely to have levies on the way to put down your rebellion.

3. The AI needs to do a better job of assessing the prospects of surviving an independence war before actually declaring independence. Perhaps it should have the option to invite other nations to become allies in support of the independence war (in exchange for territorial concessions, money or marriage, for example) before declaring independence.

4. The AI needs to react more quickly to finding itself in a no-win situation and seek to negotiate the best escape for itself rather than letting the competing agressors choose the outcome.

I'm not sure I always agree about the AI assessing no-wins situations so quickly. A lot of times situations can change dramatically based on seemingly unrelated contingents.

For example, I'm losing against a Muslim jihad. I have no hopes of beating them. Then the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor's son dies. My daughter just turned 16. They get married, forming an alliance with me, and I issue a Call to Arms, and the HRE rides in and saves me.

That's a single example, but there are many, many variations that can dramatically alter wars. Neither the AI, nor the player, should be so quick to concede defeat in a war.

definitly agree with point 1 and 2. Point 1 is mostly annoying, definitly in cases of Holy Wars or crusades where you gain what you conquered and whichever is unoccupied, resulting in getting cities or baronies in provinces that are not owned by a count that is your vassal.

Point 2 is also a good point, because now sometimes rebelling vassals are at war with some powerful nation and at this moment the only option left is to assassinate the rebelling person (which is what i usually do when that happens).
