Why the quote from Granpa Simpson ?

Tried a couple of starts as a custom North American nation based around Missouri and Cahokia; like that Mesoamerican civilization had survived rather than failing around 1350 CE.

First run started with I think ten tiles. Very slow.

Then tried with six and invested in fast development; able rulers and National Ideas. Starrted colonising down the Mississippi.

Found however I could get cavalry before I had any contact with European colonists. Surely there should be some limit on this. Historically horses only became available to the Native Americans after the rebellion of the Pueblo Indians in 1680 freed 'Spanish' horses to form wild horse herds. Okay one might be able to buy horses from colonists, but not until there are colonists in North America in significant numbers.

Since there will be a new NA dlc in the future, maybe you could post this on the suggestion forum?

You might want to wait to play again in North America since they just announced a big patch soon that will update the region and bring in new mechanics.

What was your government form and tech group?

Both of those affect horse availability.

Part of this is due to how natives used to play before the Ages system; you started at Tech 1, and 250% tech cost from the get go. It was almost impossible normally to reach the Mil Tech that gave you horses before the colonizers at the very least showed up. Now, while you still start at Tech 1, you only begin with a 50% tech cost, which can let you tech up easier and farther than before (case in point, if you cheese the current migration system you can be fully ahead in all three techs by 200%, easily keeping up or even surpassing the Europeans, even with the extra costs)

There were no horses in the Americas until Europeans took horses to the Americas; they are not a native species.
See extinction and return and historic period: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horses_in_the_United_States
Also Michael Woods BBC Series 'Conquistadors' , somewhere in the 4th programme (available on YouTube)

Horses were unavailable to the Native Americans until trade made them available or there had been escapes of horses during some sort of event similar to the 1680 Pueblo rebellion. It would take time for the escaped horse herds to spread and multiply.

Would Mesoamerican and tribal federation answer your questions ?
