Who should fix it? EA shut SC Maxis down and fired everyone out.

Yes, but they closed it very recently. A couple of months ago actually
Which means they should have had more then plenty of time. (They told customers they were not going to fix it because they didn't want to force people to download it again, this was after patch 6 or something like that (not enough a sales to justify the work and bandwidth is the underlying reason)

When your just arguing about personally held opinions it's time to either bow out of the thread or close it down.

We may as well be arguing that Green is better than Red.

I suppose as a final word I'll add this.

The only real complaints I've seen about C:SL is that the vanilla Day 1 release doesn't have everything that people want.

That's not surprising, over the months before release it was evident that people were getting more and more excited about it. So much so that Paradox and CO people actually posted to try and bring down expectations. They tried to make people understand that this is the base game which will be added to as time goes on.

I think as time passes I think those currently claiming that SC 2013 is "deeper" than C:SL will find themselves changing their minds as C:SL is expanded or added to.

For instance, for me one of the weakest aspects is Tourism, If I want to create a tourist city it's a non-starter, however a tweak of the Tourist mechanism and the inclusion of a Tourist DLC (with Hotels, Casinos, maybe even Zoos) would completely change that for me.

The way C:SL is now set up is perfectly for that.

On the other side, I can't see SC 2013 changing any further unless it's modding and it's hands are still tied by those stupid small squares to build in.

The biggest let down for me in Simcity was finding out this:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/13/simcitys-sims-dont-seem-that-smart-after-all/

Most importantly, no way you can plan a working city with a sim system like that...
They advertised it as if sims had a real life etc.

I wonder...have they fixed that region with the broken/unconnected railway yet?

I'll gladly wait until the (deathstar) patch is fully operational

To be fair, Cims don't do things smart either. They are not all simulated, they don't all have a real life, they don't haev logical homes and workplaces. They go to work completely randomly. Workplaces staffed by 10 people might only have two there at a time, ever, and their workforce might not all go to the job before dying. People are happy to be employed even if they never once leave the house to go to work. Not every child goes to school even if they have access to it. 10 people live in 2 bedroom houses. The population number might not be fudged, but the population density is arbitrary and what your populaton actually does in their daily lives is completely trivial and meaningless. At least in SimCity they actually went to work and school and lived 3-4 people per single family home. And if your population is 200k, there's never more than 65k people/cars/trains/busses/tourists/ambulances/hearses/garbage trucks total moving around, so the population count is pretty meaningless in CS too.

Personally I think the way CS fudges all this stuff is so much worse than "one person is listed as 30 on the little number in the corner". The thing it gets better is houses/jobs being permanent. But that's meaningless when 90% of people never go to work, isn't it? :(

The way C:SL is now set up is perfectly for that.

As-is, expanding tourism in CS is actually pretty impossible. The game has a hard limit on agents. There are only 65k total moving around at any time.

That means that every single

-Bus
-Garbage Truck
-Ambulance
-Hearse
-Fire truck
-Police car
-Industry-related Truck, both import and export
-Train
-Metro Train
-Boat
-Airplane
-Car
-Cars driving by on the highway with no in-city destination or origin
-Planes doing that
-Trains doing that
-Boats doing that
-Citizen
-Tourist

Counts towards that limit. Did you know that once your city gets over 100k people, the number of tourists plummets? That's because everything listed above is more important, and gets priority. The game doesn't generate tourists because it needs that limited set of slots for everything else. Imagine an expansion that adds true tourism like in SimCity. 30,000 people coming and visiting for a night or two to watch a show at the stadium. That's half the agent limit! How on earth can they call 30,000 new agents with a 65k agent limit? They have to send 30k in-town home. What if you have two stadiums on opposite ends of the city, completely separated in terms of tourist traffic thanks to different transportation methods/stations/highways? 60k people coming in for an event? That means literally all the other traffic and people but 5k disappears. Some cites that large have 5k people walking around using public transport. So suddenly when the tourists show up, surprise! No traffic whatsoever. Oh, but ambulances have to come out, and fire trucks, and police cars...so they either knock a few tourists out or they don't get to come out.

This is a hard limit. They won't be increasing this. So how on earth can they add a true tourism system when they can't have more than 65k "things" moving around at a time?

Back on topic- It looks like someone from Paradox on reddit says the patch is set for "middle of may" (which is...uh...right now) and they haven't heard anything that says it isn't on track.

So either TotalyMoo or this AzureSpecter person has no idea what they're talking about, or they're going to design, implement, test, and release wall to wall buildings within the next few days.

If we're going to get into a discussion about the quality of the game as a city builder allow me to say that this game has *very* little depth and almost feels more like a toy

Agree, but then I don't think there is anything wrong with that. When I first played SimCity in 1990, what I loved about it was that it was not a 'game' so much as a creative tool where you made your own goals and tried to create a self sustaining system. A city building 'toy' is exactly what I want.

That said, I would love to see some of the features from SC2013 in C:S simply because they improved the overall experience and when they worked in SC2013 they worked very well (tourism, multi-city trade, resource market, modular services etc).

I agree a lot of the systems in C:S are shallow. These are not bugs though, they work 'as intended'.

Here is the part you will probably not agree with me on. I believe that C:S was designed in its vanilla version to be a base city simulator. I think things outside the city management aspect such as resource management, detailed tourism, business management, and more advanced transportation systems are going to be brought in via DLC - and Im OK with this because I have played a lot of CK2 and realize that some people like some aspects and not others and being able to purchase plug in modules to play as you want on top of the vanilla game is an OK business model, in my opinion.

Personally I miss the park system of SC2013 the most. I liked plopping one park and being able to extend off it to make one large grand park. That and tourism. I liked the rewards and challenge of dealing with the simulated tourists.

No, sorry, it's not a matter of "currently". This is not something they can change and have the game continue to function. This limit exists for performance reasons and the game becomes crippled WELL before it reaches this limit.

Do you work for Fox News? that's some twisting of facts right there

What facts did I twist?

Fact: Totalymoo said here that the W2W buildings are stlll in design phase. Fact: Someone involved with the game said on reddit that the patch is set for mid-may, and there's nothing that has changed that. Those two facts combined means either someone's woefully wrong or they're going to complete the entire process for wall to wall buildings within the next few days. Can you explain to me which part of that is inaccurate?

Let me tell you a secret: Performance could be improved with future patches. You don't know what CO is doing behind closed doors, stop talking as if you would have full access to the source codes.

Guys.

What I am telling you is that REGARDLESS of their official statement, someone OFFICIAL says on reddit that the patch is set for MID MAY and that HAS NOT CHANGED. They said this yesterday!

You cannot get mad at me for reporting something someone involved with the game said! He says mid-may was when they expect it to come out, and nothing has happened to change that. No exact date, but he confirms here that it was their expected timeframe and that it's still expected. I am the messenger. THEY are making this claim. I am merely telling you about it, and explaining how it means either he or moo is wrong, or they're going to somehow magically pump this stuff out in a matter of days.

But we can object to misreporting

That was the initial time frame expected, and I've heard nothing to suggest that things aren't going to plan =) but ya, no exact date. We'd rather do it right, rather than box ourselves in to a precise delivery date.

As far as he's aware everything is on track, but there is NO DATE and he's not a developer for CO, nor is he working on the game.

That means this week, next week or even in June is possible.

Your use of phrases such as "magically pump this stuff out" really says more about you and your agenda more than anything we could say.

You need to chill out, maybe go and play that pinnacle of City Builders SimCity 2013, you know, get lost in all it's myriad complexities and build the city of your dreams (well small dreams anyway ;) )

You have to read the entire sentence for it to make sense. Of course, yes, you read it, they said "That was the time frame expected".

But if you CONTINUE reading the sentence, you get the entire message, which is "Nothing has changed and that is stll the time frame expected".

Read.

The entire.

Sentence.

Accept.

He's not.

From Co.

He's from PI, the publisher. CO (the developer) told the publisher around a months ago the ETA is a month, CO even gave that information to the public, remember? This information has not changed till now. That's all that guy is saying.
