The Morale hit from maintenance at 50% is not that big. In fact at lower level you still get a bonus. Check my Morale FAQ for details, link in my sig.
I often play at 50% now, the savings on upkeep, allow you to support a much bigger army.

The word description of your morale is just a general label. Strong describes a range of morale. You just went from the low end of "strong" to the high end.
As I said above the morale hit is not that much when you consider the potential savings.

Only for assaults or mass rebel killing do I lift my slider for a month or two.

Just make sure you do it a month or two before you want max morale.
