Try playing with army maintenance at 50%.

In my current game as Granada, I took Andalusia, Toledo, and Murcia as well as the Canary Islands in the initial war. While paying off my 800d war debt I reduced maintenance to 50%, then forgot about it. Later, while I was fighting Morocco, Castile and Portugal DOWed me. After taking Algarve, Azores Diamentina, and an Indonasian TP from Portugal, I turned on Castile and took all their provinces except the capital. It was only after the peace deal that I remembered my maintenance. Talk about patriotic troops- fighting on half pay!

The Morale hit from maintenance at 50% is not that big. In fact at lower level you still get a bonus. Check my Morale FAQ for details, link in my sig.
I often play at 50% now, the savings on upkeep, allow you to support a much bigger army.

The word description of your morale is just a general label. Strong describes a range of morale. You just went from the low end of "strong" to the high end.
As I said above the morale hit is not that much when you consider the potential savings.

Learned something new I guess, I'll admit, I didn't notice a morale penalty.

Well if it turns a boring game into a fun game for him then why not!

Oh, forget about Civ 3, I am sorry. I will go back to playing EU2 and other strategy games like Command and Conquer and Warcraft. :D
