You'll prolly get an e-mail with instructions and a temporary GG username or something. They didn't ask for your forum or GG username name when you pre-ordered, so i suppose it's the only way to make it click.
Clarification
We will be sending an e-mail to all who have pre-ordered with a download code for EU: Rome on GamersGate. Hence, no need for the GamersGate user name. The e-mail will be sent to the e-mail you gave when you pre-ordered EU:Rome.
There will be no time limit to download the game, however only people who have Pre-ordered the Collectors Edition will receive the download code. Any purchases after release will only consist of the physical Collectors box.

so will gamersgate have a special little button that CE owners will be able to click and fill in so we get it without having an username?

I wasnt going to get the CE because Im impatient and dont like waiting for the snail mail to come, only to show up on a Monday and not a Friday.
I was going to go the route of gamersgate DD but I also would love a box version, so now I get to have my cake and eat it too
