I'm starting to agree with the sentiment in the OP. Both of my games so far have ended with frustration at poorly designed game mechanics.
Playing as Bavaria, I find myself having more or less united the HRE by the mid 1400's...what am I supposed to do for the rest of the game?
Playing as Oman, I form a merchant republic, only to find that the pattern of which provinces trade in which CoT's is a mess, and I'm somehow picking up trade from half of Europe. What's the point in negotiating trade agreements if I can pick up 400+ ducats worth of trade from random provinces in countries that hate me on another continent without having do anything?
Maybe a third game will go better...but at this point I'm considering switching back to IN. At least there I could make it to 1500 without having the game ruined.
