I would love to have the next major dlc focus on two things: Combat and Economy. I want these systems deepened and allow me to interact with them in more ways than forming units and creating buildings. Ways to further differentiate my country from my neighbors.

I would like the entire military aspect of the game simplified and completely revamped. The whole tactics system is a mess and rewards meaningless army composition min maxing that shouldn't be in a game where you stare at character stats for the most part. I'd also like to see a more comprehensible commander system implemented like in RotTK13. I just want to appoint my commander, tell him where to go, and have the armies duke it out. I don't want to take out my calculator to count how many of a certain type of troops I should have so that a certain OP tactic will fire. The current system also works against the AI since it doesn't do the min maxing like the player.

If East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Indochina, Indonesia, Philippines) is to be added, it needs to be the very last major CK2 DLC. It will finally give a fair shake to players that play realms in both Eastern Europe and the Mid East since the Mongols will have to take care of business in China before turning their hordes west. Count level viceroys (governors) will be introduced which also will better simulate the Byzantines, Islamic realms, and Eastern European states which really didn't have duke and count level feudal style vassals per say. A Mandate of Heaven mechanic, the main political theory governing a Chinese realm could also work with the Byzantines and other non Islamic empire level realms. Besides if the devs plan to include East Asia in CK3 at the start, it's best to work out the kinks now with this proposed major DLC and do refinements from there.

I guess it would be kind of weird to have him portraitless like this during the era when he's actually alive and doing things, and I don't know enough about the issue to know whether, say, having him be a playable character would also be considered offensive (perhaps something Paradox would prefer to avoid thinking about), but in principle they did at least find a way to avoid the visual depiction issue.

No thanks to any expansion backwards, as that territory belongs to a separate/standalone game in my opinion. While working on WtWSMS, which is centred around the Migrational Era, I was confirmed in how unfitting this period would be for a DLC or the vanilla game. With mods, we have some options the developers can't do, such as removing vanilla content and working on a more focused scope, but it is still impossible to alter more fundamental aspects of the game, as that would require a completely different opus.

As for my opinion on the question asked in the OP, if an expansion could fit in some aspects of cadet branches, lategame content, inland republics or naval combat, I would be more than satisfied.

Better military system and cadet branches shouldn't be DLC features... I mean... how would you make Cadet branches DLC only? Make France unplayable because France was ruled nearly allways by Cadet dynasties?

And Migration era is not fitting for CK.

I'm pretty sure Paradox could get past the Mohammad issue by simply abstracting him into just a few different events. I know this would probably not be satisfactory from a gameplay perspective (since you obviously can't play as him, as he would only be vaguely mentioned through events), but if Paradox wants to avoid pissing off some people, then that's probably the best way to do it. Or Paradox could just say screw it and portray him anyway. Either option is fine.

The bigger, and more important issue is that at present CK2 does not have the proper mechanics to simulate the migrations, and it would be tricky to balance how Islam would spread. This, and that you'd have to include so many more characters, events, religions, and flavor, it would also hurt performance. Not only that, but as you go further back in time, it becomes more and more difficult to find details and documents relating to the actual people that ruled the various kingdoms, and it becomes harder to simulate kingdoms with the current government types (Feudalism of 1066 for instance wasn't quite the same as Feudalism in 466). I believe if they want to go further back, they'll have to do it with a CK3, and design said CK3 with the migrations and early quasi-Feudalism and the rise of Islam in mind.
