I have updated the main forum FAQ to contain lots more graphics information so I'm unstickying this thread.

Thanks for that. It's almost impossible to get the "right" graphics settings for most games, as apparently publishers can't be bothered to explain this to their customers.

Then I presume that the game will not either. Good that I found this out now before I plunked down money. I'll just have to satisfy myself with my venerable copy of EU2.

Yep I wonder how many coniptions Johan and Co. are having about the fact that large numbers of DELL Laptops and probaby any laptop with Intel integrated chipsets, (I wonder how much market share Intel has... I bet it's pretty significant if DELL is using them) sold in the last couple years won't run thier game.... I imagine it was unintentional but limiting a game to specific hardware manufactures equipment can't be good from a marketing perspective...

I appreciate Mr. T's work to identify the issue but his suggestion to not buy Intel Chipsets isn't very helpful for those of us who don't have a choice in what we buy. I guess this means I won't be purchasing any Paradox games in the forseeable future. Too bad... I was very much looking forward to it...

Good thing I had already learned the hard way about pre-ordering software and didn't buy EU3. I suppose they'll let us know when there's a fix... hopefully this rather bad oversight won't cost Paradox too much.

A LOT of games don't work with Intel graphic chips.

Simply put, they're poorly designed, and Intel has (so far) refused to acknowledge the problem.

Fair enough, but I do want to point out that the failing lies primarily with Intel for their decision not to correctly support the Dx9.0 library, not in Paradox for deciding not to dual-code the game to run in OpenGL as well as Dx and therefore have to develop their own libraries at vast cost. You'll note that Paradox is far from being the only developer to do this. Companies with MUCH large budgets and huge volume mainstream products (Civ IV, Quake 4, Oblivion, etc.) are all incapable of running on most Intel chipsets.

Anyway, I guess you don't have an available slot that you can put a compatible graphics card into, and are therefore not going to be able to run the game. I hate to think how many other game releases will be unavailable to you in the coming months and years...probably a large majority of them.

I agree - it is up to the hardware manufacturers to make sure their equipment can function properly, not Paradox et al to mop up after them doing half a job.

It is annoying as heck when a 5 week old laptop won't run EU3, but the blame for that lies with Intel.

I'll bite the bullet and make myself a gaming pc!

Yes your right... I dont' have an available slot... the only time I have to play games is for an hour or two on weekends when the kids are watching saturday morning cartoons, and on 2 or 3 or so lunchhours where I don't have meetings to attend... oh yea an on the occational airline flight and business trip in hotel rooms... all places where I need to use a laptop... and most of them when I'm using my business machine... (my companies liberal enough to allow them as long as it's not when your suppose to be working), but the drawback is I'm stuck with the Laptop I'm issued,,, and our CEO sits on Intels board of directors as an advisor.

as for upcomming releases... I guess it's just the writing on the wall that I'm getting to old for computer games... I still enjoy them but as a father of 3 and balencing a career, family, home repairs and everything else doesn't leave enough time to justify buying a dedicated gaming machine that i'd get to play maybe once every other week for an hour or two.

If you're lucky and your company replaces your laptop on a regular basis, I read that Intel's GMA X3000 is (allegedly) being designed with real hardware support of the Dx9.0 library instead of using software emulation (that doesn't work) to mimic it. Maybe when you get your next business upgrade, you can find a way to get your hands on one of those? At least it's a sideways admission from Intel that their emulation system isn't what they say it is.

yea unfortunately this Laptops brand new, (well 7 months old)... and the typical cycle time for replacement is 3 yrs, or when you switch positions... for personal finance reasons I'd like to stay in this job for the 5 yr maximum, (I have a very sweet deal going for compensation that will likely not be renewed, (they were desparate)) ... trust me.... as much fun as EU3 would likely have been it's not worth giving up $40,000/yr in temporary benefits... (and yes will all the extra I could easly afford the gaming machine... it's just not worth spending $5000 on something I'll never get to use... and I'm saying this as I have another window open to alienware drooling over thier laptops and trying to figure out how to get my wife to agree to let me buy one  man I'm pathetic... p.s. gaming machines should have good photo/video editing capability right??? ..)

Absolutely. In fact a good PC with a nice graphics card is essential for making good photographs of your children and pets. Your wife will obviously see the special benefits that a home computer would bring to the family and should agree to the purchase of one immediately! :p

I have a problem which i am not sure how to solve. When I try to play Demo I get the error rigth at the start that game needs pixelshredr (sp) 2.0 Well I am preaty sure I have it as my video card is Radeon 9250 256 MB. I can play MTW2 no problem and WoW. From the screens I do not think that EU3 has better grafic so what is wrong?

Any help would be greatly apricieted. :)

As per the links I've provided in the sticky, the feature listing that I have of ATI cards shows the 9250 as having only the Dx8.1 library and thus only supports PS1.0, not 2.0. EU3 will not work on that card and it is quite unlikely that is will be something that Paradox will fix.

Question

Ok, so I've been tryin to go through all these different threads for graphics issues, but I cant seem to find the answer to this question.... is there a fix or solution yet to the problem "failed to create graphics device" ? I have a laptop with a mobility radeon 9600/9700 series and I have the most recent drivers/catalyst control center for it. Also, if/when I buy the full version of EU3 am I going to have this same issue? Any help with this would be much appreciated, thanks!

I'm having problems in running the demo. It just doesn't open. I've got an Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS . It has Directx 9.0c so It should open normally the game...shouldn't?

So maybe the problem can be the download?

(ERROR NAME: THE EU3DEMO.EXE found problems and had to be closed)

I have the same problem as well.

"Failed to create graphics device exiting"

Dell laptop.

Inspiron 1100 14.1 XGA P4 2.4GHz

768 DRAM

The form I got listing the specs does not mention what video card I have.

Is it a problem I can fix or will I need to upgrade.

Best regards,
Stacey

If video card is not listed I supposse it shoild be an integrated card (if you have a very good card the vendor usually told that in the specs lists!)

Searching in Google I have found a review of Inspiron 1100
http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Inspiron_1100/4505-3121_7-21127907.html
and the review said:
CNET Review said:
For various prices, you can choose higher-end specs such as a 2.4GHz desktop Pentium 4 CPU; up to 1GB of memory; a DVD, CD-RW, or DVD/CD-RW combo drive; a 40GB, 5,400rpm hard drive; and a 15-inch XGA display. All configurations come with the same graphics chip: a 64BM Intel 845G.

So bad luck, it 's an intel integrated card
