Had one of my best games ever as Frankfurt, once. But of course I lost the free city status, early on. But what IF you decided to maintain being free city for a long time... while still expanding as much as possible. Would it be best to just have one big vassal, or multiple vassals? Could you keep really large vassal(s) under control? Using what strategies?

For example, developing their provinces... while also growing as tall as possible, yourself. Frankfurt, with it's farmland seems ideal. But then again, my real dream is to have my vassal form the German nation... so they would need Frankfurt to do that. Maybe the ultimate goal would be to play as... ULM (of course), and have Germany be your vassal... while still being a free city.

So can this be done, and what tips & strategies could help one best achieve it?

edit: Germany would leave the HRE... but would I still be a little island, within it? And since I'm the overlord... w/ good relations w/ Austria, could I add it all back?

I can think of no other thing as a free city but to develop like crazy and have Teutonic order for a march. That way you get holy space marines protecting your ass-ets. Roleplaying to boot! :D
