One classic is to tag-switch to a random nation at regular intervals (say every time your monarch dies, or every 20 years), looks like good fun. The idea is to repeatedly get the "get this nation up and running" challenge that tends to define the early game.

I'm currently experimenting with an opposite variant, because I'm a little tired of the same old same old: pick a powerful nation, try to run it into the ground. When you can't keep it together any longer, switch to another great power (lazy variant is to wreck the #1 GP each time). My rules:
  • you are not allowed to care about budget balance, just spend money on what you want/need, fund everything with loans, corruption, and even exploiting development,
  • you are not allowed to care about Overextension or Aggressive Expansion (or at least not care much), ((this means start more wars than you ought to, don't wait for full recovery between wars, grab all the land you can, etc))
  • you are not allowed to case about brewing disasters, if any happen to pop up,
  • you are not allowed to peace out unless it's 100% warscore, either way. Maybe allow an exception for coalition wars here.
  • otherwise, play as normal.
The idea is to just go nuts, get yourself in trouble, then go full @Da9L on it until you just can't keep it together any more.

I dunno... start as Denmark. Rival Muscovy. Grant independence to Sweden & rival them, also. Then go for exploration ideas... head to the far east ASAP. No CB Korea. Start conquering west across Beijing, brutally & relentlessly pushing your way across the steppes, towards the Urals. Accept Korean & northern Chinese, and setup a 'base camp' there. Colonize Siberia while you're at it.

Soon you'll be running into Muscovy/Russia from the EAST. Tell them, "I'll bet you didn't see this coming, you S.O.B.!" Conquer them real nastily, turning their whole country into a bunch of little enclaves. But always bee-lining for Karelia. Then once you've established a firm border w/ Sweden from the EAST... send them a communiqué:

"Yeah. About your so-called 'independence'...

It was just a PRANK, bro!"

Take on Finland as a vassal, and feed all of Sweden to them. When Sweden is down to one province, vassalize it. Then GIVE them one province, some remote place in NE Siberia. Take their last remaining Scandinavian province, and give them independence. Guarantee them always, just so that no one can put them out of their misery.

Turn to Finland and say: "all I ever wanted was a friend, that would appreciate me & be grateful."

-Eventually annex Finland peacefully, and then proceed to convert all Scandinavian provinces to Danish. Then write an illustrated AAR about this whole saga, and post it in a Swedish forum.

Who hurt you?

You mean who did the Swedes hurt, during their 'forced assimilation' tactics around the Skåne area? -Yeah, I know about that.

But no, I actually don't care at all, and have nothing to do with any/either culture. I'm just really good at role-playing, and 'walking a mile in someone else's shoes' -as the saying goes. So good at role-playing, in fact, that you really believed I had some passion. -But it's just a switch that I can turn on & off. I find that when I'm playing a game, I really get more enjoyment out of it, when I psyche myself into the role.

In this case, I was stepping into the shoes of a bitter Dane (I've seen a few of those), with a certain foresight of post-1444 history. But that ain't me, bro. I'm a 'Murican with no real cares of Scandinavian rivalries. Although it must be said; you have to at least pretend something along those lines, to better 'fit in' on this forum. Next time I'll be more pro-Sweden.

Swedes make games that really tick me off on a regular basis, though. A real love-hate relationship, I must say. Maybe there is more to this. So what, should I lay on the couch, and you can take notes? What is your hourly rate & credentials?
