Hi All

So I managed to get my mate onto EU and we are almost through his "learning" game. We started as him (England) and me (Castile), working together, we have divided America (north / south) between us and drew an imaginary line through Europe which we have been working on. I have been more successful and currently have all of Iberia, Seville Node Morocco, Lower Half of France (he has northern France), All of Italy, All of Hungry and surrounding states etc.

He has all of Great Britain, Norther France, The Low Countries, and a bunch of vassals in Germany etc.

We have been playing this on 1.5.1 option in Steam as that was when we started the game.

Basically the year is 1736 so less than a 100 years to go so we are looking forward to the next game, and I have a few questions/idea requests:

1. EU version, like I said we played 1.5.1, and that is all he knows (this was his first game). When we start again what is the best version to play at in your opinion? I briefly played 1.6 which was ok, didn't play enough of it to decide if I liked it better than 1.5.1. Also we have no expansions, should we invest in any of the new expansions before starting again?

2. We are looking for another tag team set of starting nations. We don't want to play against each other so it will be allies for life again haha. Obviously a bit harder but he is still new (although I can carry him I guess, but it sucks for him if he is always the weaker of the pair like this time). We want a pair of nations that could complement each other, with clear and easy lines of boarders etc where we wont be annoying each other (for example conflicting trade etc). Other than that, open it anything, Europe, outside Europe the works.

3. When giving options for 2 above, keep in the back of your mind that we are trying to talk another mate into EU so there might be a third nation required.

Cheers

Easy ones:
Savoy and Burgundy (+Denmark as a third nation)
Denmark and Austria (+Poland)
Poland and Ottomans (+Austria)
Sweden and Poland (+England)
Ottomans and Muscovy/Novgorod (+Denmark)
Aragon and Burgundy (+Austria)
Medium ones:
Savoy/Milan/Venice and Austria (+Hansa/Denmark)
Brandenburg and Novgorod (+Crimea)
Aragon and Burgundy (+Bavaria)
RoTW:
Pasai/Malacca/Brunei + Japan

For Europeans games you just pick land power+ NorthSea trade-centered power + Mediterranean Power trying to be close enought to able to beat early threats (France/Poland/Austria/Burgundy). Nations like Genoa/Venice/Austria/Denmark/England are good choices since they can influence anywhere on the map.

The list assumes I correctly understood the term inexperienced :)

Try some non-Western nations in 1.8 - there are more provinces to work with and a few of the tech groups were buffed. Timurids + Mamluks + (Oman or QQ or Ethiopia) could be good.

Good ideas, we were already thinking about the Aragon/Burgandy game.

What about the version?
If you're playing not in Europe than definitely 1.8.

IN Europe there is not that much difference. In 1.8 everybody in Europe is much richer (due to reworked goods price), so it will be easier to play.

I have an idea for a competitive 3-player coop. 1492 start, one player takes Livonian Order, another takes Astrakhan, another takes Sibir. Whoever controls Moscow at the end of the game wins. AI can win too if it holds Moskva. This reflects the basic strategic situation at the start of the Russian Civil War of 1918. If you'd like to play a shorter game, you can have it end in 1700 or 1600, no need to play until 1821. You could also include Neva (St. Petersburg) as a required victory objective in which case a tie would be possible if one player holds Moskva and another holds Neva.

I play exclusively coop multiplayer and our last few games have been fun. Savoy-Venice was interesting. My buddy ended up forming the HRE unexpectedly when he became emperor after I vassilized Austria on a whim. I mainly focused on India and forming trade companies. Our last game of Ethiopia-Najd was great. Najd has such great national ideas, and is a challenge in the early game. Plus we didn't fight over the same trade nodes as we did in the savoy-Venice game.

Hansa and Venice is a non-interactive game for quite a long time.
