EU3 had 1453 as the originally start date and then it was moved to 1399 with the last expansions it had. It fit well with the theme of Early Modern Period colonization and empires as many historians place 1453 as the end of the Middle Ages with the fall of Byzantium (or successor state of the Western Roman Empire). Some place it at 1492 with the discovery of the New World for symbolic purposes, other historians round the date to 1500 for simplicity. The 1399 date allows more playtime and also the availability to play as Byzantium but it seems to be a bit to far back for a Europe of consolidated powers to form. The developers later regretted having 1399 as the start date.

EU4 starts in 1444. It's a balanced start because it takes place after the Battle of Varna which separates the personal union of Poland and Hungary. Having a Poland-Hungary in the early game could be lethal because it is in an area that is surrounded by much weaker powers. It also offers the option to play Byzantium, although historically, Constantinople fell 9 years later.

When deciding on a start date, certain factors influence the decision:

1) Balance of regional powers, especially in Europe where most players tend to play.
2) Early enough to maximize gameplay time, though this can fluctuate with the end date being changed.
3) Enough time to consolidate "continental homelands" before the colonial period.
4) Late enough to reduce a Balkanized Europe and to allow the AI to enable the creation of strong regional powers.
5) Late enough that there is at least some resemblance to historical or plausible outcomes up until the mid game.
6) For some players, the existence of the Byzantines is important, so anything after 1453 is unfavorable to them.

In my personal opinion, I like to see solid numbers or symbolic years. For me, 1444 is a spontaneous year that just happens to be ideal due to the outcome of the Battle of Varna and large consolidations of land for regional powers in Europe.

I would personally prefer to see 1448 to 1848 which allows a full and exact 400 years of gameplay. It still allows for the existence of Byzantium and it ends on the symbolic date of 1848 which is the Springtime of Nations or when nationalism in Europe finally reached its high point. It also grants more time to colonize more of Asia and Africa. It is unfortunate that the game ends in 1821 when most of Asia and Africa is historically barely even touched yet.
Some reasons why 1448 is not a bad idea. In 1445, Portugal sets up a Feitoria in Arguin which would help gear Portugal for a Africa trade hub start. In 1448, the Kalmar Union is dissolved, leaving Denmark, Norway, and Sweden as independent nations (although some might dislike this).

If we want to move back in time and avoid having the Poland-Hungary behemoth, we'd have to go before 1440. We could always have 1436 as the start date so it slides in with Victoria's start date of 1836. Lithuania is in the middle of a civil war with one side backed by the Teutonic Knights and the other backed by Poland. This could have interesting effects on what goes on in Eastern Europe as the game progresses. The Hussite Wars end and the rebellion in Sweden is put down.

Any other opinions on start and end dates?

The swedish war against denmark began 1521. Sweden became formally independent 1523 with king Gustav Vasa. And Norway stayed in a union under Denmark until 1815.

The date you suggested would therefore not impact the Scandinavia powers all that much.

Iberian unification. Death of TO, Byzantium, Granada, Timurids, Jaunpur, etc. All those random nations that fuck up the map but only exist so we can allow Byzantium to reform.

Starts with a super strong Ak Koyunlu, Unified Spain, strong Habsburbs, Strong Delhi that can get conquered by Mugals. Unified PLC to oppose unified Moscovy (with Novgorod under their belt.) Very close to Swedish independence so that can be ramped up without being ahistorical.

What we lose: Nothing that matters. What we gain: Far more balanced start date that doesn't need you to cheese in things like the Danzig war, 5 Moscovite vassals, free Constantinople core, etc. to have strong majors.

Tbh I really like the 1444 start date. I always saw the 1453 start as kinda the natural choice, if you want to set a limit in this period, but having Byzantium as an option to play, really makes the game more interesting. It's just a cool thing to try and restore the empire.

I've played a lot of Denmark and I think it would be a shame, if the Kalmar Union would not be in the game at start. The union was ofc reinstated again, but it gives a bit of flavour to the region that you have to manage three similar sized nations under one crown. I guess it could be sorted with a Danish restoration of union casus belli on Sweden, but still. I like the union.

Wrt Arguin, Portugal is already the earliest colonizer, so giving them an even bigger headstart might be problematic.

1848 as ending year is not a bad idea, but the game isn't really equipped to handle the transitions to nationalism and the emergency of democracies imo. Yes, there is parliaments and you could always increase things like revolts, but isn't EU4 very much a monarchs game? And the end of the Napoleonic wars is usually the watershed you set between 18th & 19th century, historically speaking.

1492, as in EU1 iirc, is imo a bit too late. It gives the already historical colonizers a too big headstart and you miss out on a lot of fun stuff, like the conquest of Granada-reconquest of Iberia. Also, Ottomans would be even stronger.

Since EU4 start date was premised with the "Rise of the Ottomans," I think it is behooving that EU5 would start on 21 July 1402 - the day after the Battle of Angora

Europe: this is during the great occidental schism period when there were three popes, and the Sweden-Denmark-Norway union was around 1400.

Moreover, often overlooked, China's Zheng He started his great voyages around 1405!

1444 is iconic.

You really think the devs would revisit the whole map again to check if every province and or tag still existed?

EU5 isn't going in development for a loooooong time.

As I see it 1444 or 1453.
They have already researched 1444 a lot, so it would be pointless making it go to waste. 1445 was also the year the Portuguese exploration of Africa really started to kick into high gear.
1453 has the benefit of allowing us to do away with the Hundred Years war mess.

Earlier start dates has the problems of 1. the Polish-Hungarian union or Bohemian-Hungarian union, 2. the Hussite wars, 3. even more Hundred Years war, 4. the Western Schism and 5. the requirement for slowing down major gameplay mechanics even more.

Later start dates has the problem that too many nations has blobbed too much and become too strong.

1444 is also quite well balanced, with no nation except Ming being unstoppable monsters, and Ming has its own weaknesses.

1444 is a great start date. The 1450's are popularly known as the beginning the early modern era (which the game covers) and 1444 is easy to remember and early enough for the fan-favorite Byzantine empire to still exist. Generally you want the latest start date possible for the most accurate historical progression, so the only better choices would be something silly like 1452. What I would change is the end date, as IMO EU4 does a piss-poor job of representation the Napoleonic period. I would go with an end around 1780, as that also avoids industrialization, which is best done in Vicky 3.

Or should EU5 end sooner and have Victoria 4 start earlier and focus on having the same map and selling Victoria as an expansion/stand alone game? That way the whole industrial revolution takes place under Victoria 4 as well as the growth of the middle classes, nationalism, ideologies, and then world war.

I'd move the end date to 1836 for a smooth Victoria 2 transition.

Anything between 1400 and 1444 is fine for starting.
The industrialisation period had already begun by the mid 1700s, and EU4 struggles to do that part well already.

Move the end date back and have the next Victoria game start earlier instead. It'd be far easier for a Victoria type game to pick up the pieces in the 18th century than the reverse.

1444 is a nice start date, i think the end date should be before the industralization, because this game focused on the modern age, I think they should end on 1750 and release Victoria 3 from 1750 to 1936 for a extend timeline between games (victoria is better reflecting industrialization and global trade than eu4)
