Ideal number of players in MP

Hi!

I posted this thread here, because this forum seems much more active than the multiplayer forum for EU3. If it really can't stay here, I'm sorry it has to be moved.

What is the ideal number of players in a standard Grand Campaign set (more or less) in Europe? What are your experience and what are the smallest and biggest games (in numbers of players) that you have enjoyed?

I usually play MPs with between 9 and 12 people and wonder if that's really ideal.

I meant to start this thread as a poll, but it seems that's not possible.

It really depends on what kind of game you are looking for.

I would say probably 6-7 in Europe and 2-3 in Asia would give a good balance. I think the best split of players is probably England, Austria/Teutons/Bohemia/Burgundy, France, Castille/Aragon, Portugal, Milan/Naples/Venezia, Russia and Ottomans in Europe, and Japan, Ming, and one of the Indians in Asia.

I think some 6-10 players playing states in the HRE is a funny MP game competing for the crown of the empire

Are you looking for an around the world game, or a European one. Also, is it competitive or RP?

Europe, as stated in the initial post. It is mostly competetive with a little RP mixed in...

Hmmm, then the ideal composition would be about 12 players as follows

1 Spanish Player
1 Portuguese Player
1 French Player
1 English Player
1 Dutch Player
1 BB Player
1 Hansa Player
1 Bohemia/Austria Player
1 Eastern European Nation
1 Russian Nation
1 Ottoman Player
1 Italian Nation

Basically what Boris posted was one nation for every region of nations in Europe. You can forego the Eastern European nation, usually causing some serious friction between the Russian player and the Bohemian/Austrian player.

Also, as for the Asian suggestion above, I would remove Ming in favor of Manchu.

6-7 is probably best for Europe. If you want people in other parts of the world you can add to that.

Let me also just add, unless you're doing a RP or are playing with friends (or at least people that aren't jerks), rather then strangers, have the Spain player play Aragon if theirs a Portugal player. Otherwise, it's far too easy for Castile to take Portugal the minute France is distracted.

I've found these 12 to be optimal. I've played multiplayer games with more people in Europe but it gets really crowded.

In most games, karma comes into play, discouraging the Spainsh plyer from killing the Portuguese one.

Yeah, the same would go for Holland. I've played Holland a few times now and always got France to watch my back until I was strong enough to bully all the other HRE members, England and Scandinavia myself.

That's why I say have the Spain player be Aragon. It's a lot harder for Aragon to eat Portugal then it is for Castile to do so, and a lot easier for human-Port to defend from Castile-AI then otherwise.

Of course, then you can run in to player-France eating player-Aragon, but they do have their mountains, and it's a lot easier for the Holland or Burgundy player or even the German players to interfere in that war then it is for people to interfere in the Castile-Portugal one.

Then you have played casual friendly games(or something like that) bro as Portugal is similar to Ireland and we all know Ireland dies in a MP unless there is really good agreement between England
