I know there are a lot of threads about how terrible the sector “management” system is, but I am starting a new one to pose an idea on how it could be improved.
Right now you can set the focus of a sector, but it doesn’t work to well. Besides, setting the focus of an entire sector is too broad. Some planets are best for trade value, some are best for mining and refining, some are better for research, etc. So, in order to reduce micromanagement, perhaps we need a system that allows us to determine what sort of planet a new colony will be, and we have templates for those types, so that we select a template we have made, and the AI constructs the buildings from that template as the slots open up, and the AI builds the needed sectors. Of course setting up the templates might take some time and they might need adjusting from time to time, but that is far better than spending 30 minutes micromanaging 100 planets only to have to start again when you get to the last one.
The templates could be named whatever you want, and perhaps they would show up in the list of planet categories like forge world and generator world. The templates should be fully customizable, names and buildings and maybe percentage of each district type to be built. Then you just give your sectors the resources, and the AI builds. The only thing is the AI needs to be smart enough to build new sectors only when there is a need, don’t just build all the sectors right away or the maintenance costs will kill you while there is not enough pops to work them.
Providing a system like this would solve a lot of the micromanagement problems.
Let me know what you think or if you have any better solutions to the sector problem.

I usually like to micro manage my planets, but I have had play throughs where I ended up taking over the entire galaxy. Something like this would make those play throughs much more manageable.

I would say let the player decide from a list what they want for worlds based on type (ex mining world) and size (small 10-13, med 14-18, large 19-25) and then let them automate. if I could build up a save file and pull from a list that would be great.

The game already has many templates for automated planetary management. I don't know if they are used for a player's empire or only for AI empires. The way they are written make me doubt that they could be customizable from within a game, but yeah, the files could be duplicated and renamed, and then a player could customize them to better suit their game style, and the game would use them when automation is activated.

Templates would be very good for space stations too, building the same 15 times for naval capacity isn't that fun
