Currently the interface to move pops to their best jobs or build the right robot is a hassle. I was trying to figure out how to solve this issue but then realized that it would probably be easier to just modify pops that already had jobs.

What if templates automatically got applied to pops based on their jobs over time? Pops can already self-genemod, what if they did it intelligently and on purpose instead of as a random event?

My idea would be that in addition to growing/building/declining pops, we would have a modding pop. Some automatically selected pop would take on the existing template best suited to its current job. Robotocists and other +growth workers could also enhance mod speed, along with the appropriate ascension paths. You'd still leave the existing method of pop modification, since that would represent a big state sponsored effort while this represents more of a slower, ad hoc change.

There is the issue of using +growth speed pops to populate a planet and then modding into -growth speed to gain trait points that needs to be addressed. There is also the question of how this would interact with cross-breeding.

I'm interested in your thoughts. Would this work or is it a silly idea?

Actually population growth in general, for biologicals as well as mechanicals, is FUBAR at the moment. The new system does not handle having more than one species at all well. Until they fix the basic misconception regarding favoring the minority species in the empire for all new growth and go back to a more logical system based on proportionality, things will continue to be a big mess in this area.

I know your question is about job assignment rather than pop growth, but they are interrelated. You can't get the right guys on the right jobs if you can't get the right species or model on the planet in the right quantities in the first place.

At that point you might as well just remove all trait and make a generic "10% better at jobs" bonus. There definitely need to be some improvement in the pop system, but I don't want all pop to become irrelevant.

I'd rather you be able to go in the species tabs and rank job priority for every species and pop would move by themselves in accordance with the ranking you gave them (with pop being able to trade job in same strata). You'd still need to manage pop number so you didn't end with a framing world full or miner pop, but at least you wouldn't have to go crazy closing and opening job to try and coax the right species to the right place.
