Few days ago I have construct a express metro system in my city and I would like to share some idea and suggestion in designing such system.

Background
At the beginning, I am going to construct a circle line metro that connect four cities in the map. But there is problem that the round trip time is too long and having too much station that the depot cannot affort the huge number of train and the traveling time become unacceptable.
So, In the biggest urban section, I change the track into 4-lines and provide express and local service.

Application
As we are not allow to build platform on the inner track of 4-track section, The local train will travel on two side of the track and the local station layout will be like this.

The interchange station will be like this and let passanger to change between local and express.

Suggestion
In fact, the local-express interchange station in practical world will be like this, the interchange between two lines is cross platform interchange and passanger can just walk to other side of platform and boarding the different types of train. In CIM2 it is not possible to do so due to the restriction of platform construction.

1.) For metro station, platform can be build on both side of track. Or even left and right hand side build together (What we call Spanish solution)
2.) For metro station, platform near by each other can be stick/integrated together an passenger can walk through the two platform without using the teleporter. This can enhance the interchange efficiency.

Gotta say, I'm a little astonished you messed-around with metro in the game long enough to even consider these things. Not being able to see (and consequently build) the bloody tracks under roads was a show-stopper for me. :(

I love tinkering with the metro lines. With CiM1 I would agree with you for the need for Cims to quickly switch lines on the same platform. With CiM2 since they move so quickly to the sidewalk and back in the other stop I don't feel like it's an issue.
As for not being able to see the tracks under roads, just build it slightly to one side of the road (if you're following a road) or end segments between roads.
I agree it's not super easy to see underground but it's doable. I hope the new underground view doesn't scrap the current view. I like planning surface routes without buildings in the way using the current underground view.

Yeah the decision to not make roads more transparent is frankly baffling.

Gotta say, I'm a little astonished you messed-around with metro in the game long enough to even consider these things. Not being able to see (and consequently build) the bloody tracks under roads was a show-stopper for me. :(

I just demolish the road -> build metro track -> rebuild the road...Hopefully transparent road in underground view will be included in the next patch.

That's way too involved to be bothered at that point. I don't want to rebuild all the main roads just to get some metro down. o_O
That's what actual Cut-and-cover tunneling method in the real world...Although all of us agree that the underground UI is necessary to improve.

Well, yes, but hyper-accurate models of reality a fun game does not make. ;)

I'm anxiously waiting on that patch. I really want to love and start using metro (and the game, for that matter) but my brain goes in a full tail-spin trying to finagle the view so I can see around roads. It's all too headachey. >.<

Suggestion


As there is no double platform and as passenger will easily move from stop A to stop B, I hardly see why this would be needed.
It would be if there was a long way for the passenger to reach one station from the other, but it's not the case.

Maybe for a CiM3, if they go back at displaying the platform.
