In the same way each political faction has a leader why not have each family have a pater familias? Perhaps have modifiers that cause increased family consistency (ie they all cluster in one party or another, and if the pater familias changes parties he will bring the greater part of his family in that direction). This could be coupled with increased control of families (arranged marriages and divorces). Alliances between families could play a part in this. You could also keep track over what level the family is in Rome (ie how many consuls/men who have had triumphs/etc have come from the family) and you could have mechanics for a family to skyrocket in prestige by having one of the members being a novus homo.
Another nice feature would be an automatic auto pause mechanic that pauses and prompts you when a particular office term is up so you don't have to watch it and can keep the offices/duxes cycling with maximum efficiency.
Another would be temporary dictatorship in republics. Say it is an event that can happen when you are losing a war, your highest martial character could appear with a fresh army in your capital and he becomes your head of state for a set period (you can then name a master of horse instead of two censors).
Lastly, have you ever though about reworking triumphs? First of all the bonuses should be much higher but triumphs should also be much rarer. Suppose when a foreign war breaks out you designate an overall commander of the war (a consul/proconsul) and if and only if that war is successful and there is enough political support he can celebrate a triumph. The present triumph button can remain but be changed to "ovation" (as you can have one after defeating slaves/rebels/pirates).
