Wabanaki Mawuhkacik (Confederacy)
The people are called “Wabanakik”
EU4 Wabanaki map.png

The map part of the post makes up most of their historic lands at the time of formation. But it’s likely some other local Algonquian tribes would have been in their sphere of influence if not for British pressure in the south. They are just out of reach from some great trade centers too.

Notable features, the nation has both Eastern Algonquian and French as accepted cultures. Can be formed by the Abenaki or Mi’kmaq nations when bordered by the French or English. Maybe there needs to be some special union with the Abenaki and Mi’kmaq? Upon formation French land may become part of the Confederacy? The nation was made up of people who were Catholic and followers of the local beliefs, don’t know if that would work in game.

New government system maybe? “Fire Council” administrative, diplomatic, and military points are determined by three distinct leaders that have life long appointments. Most leaders would be older men. In most cases they would last 10-40 years. Wabanaki never had a single leader, it was ruled over by a council of chiefs called sakoms that made domestic and international decisions by means of debating and coming to a consensus. Fire councils in Wabanaki would happen when ever there was a call in any one of the political hubs in the nation, and a large gathering would always happen every three years at Caughnawaga (which is not actually in the nation). The 'capital' would shift around when ever needed so for the game, the capital could be the same as the nation that formed it.

-----

Government rank: Kingdom

Tec: Don’t know. Would be cool if it was “High American/Western” but probably should have a penalty until it can do the standard Native American requirements to shift. Could be cool if there was a tec group called “contacted” which reduced the standard Native penalty depending on tec group it “contacted.” Chinese would reduce less than Western.

Wanted to make sure they could hold their own a bit. There are a lot of powerful nations in the region.

National Ideas:

Traditions:

  • National Unrest -2
Nská'wehadin (Assembly). This was the political glue to the Wabanaki. It was a system of electing new sakoms that all the member tribes would work with, with the other tribes confirming a nomination. They would often pick people who worked well with the other sakoms. The nation would shift their view to seeing their tribes as “brothers” and it was very successful at not only keeping peace in Wabanaki, but also keeping all the members involved and active in the government.

  • Diplomats +1
Sakoms

The Wabanaki would almost never send one diplomat, but often at least 5 to deal with international matters. Their dealings would have people representing their tribe able to speak on all issues they choose to show up for.

Ideas:

  • Technology Cost -5.0%
The Métis:

Unlike most Europeans, the French came in small numbers and often married into local tribes. They would introduce the Wabanaki people to new ideas and technologies. From guns to books. A new generation of people, both Wabanaki and French would cement the worlds together.

  • Goods Produced Modifier: +10%
Mawuhkacik (word for team or confederacy):

With the tribes no longer fighting each other for resources like beaver to trade with the French, and now keeping the Iroquois out of their lands together, they were able to increase the production of their goods.

  • Shipbuilding Time: -10%
Canoe Experts.

The rivers and ocean are the highways of the Wabanaki. With a long history of sophisticated Canoe building, they are all the more important now that they must travel to each others villages all the more often.

  • Morale of Armies: +10%
King William’s War:

With the newly united Confederation, and the English pushing into Wabanaki/Acadian lands, the tribes are ready to come together with their French allies to push back the English. The Wabanaki are unwilling to submit.

  • Land Leader Maneuver: +2.00
Sakom Greylock:

When peace was made with the English after Drummer’s War, Greylock would not back down. He waged a Gorilla war for over 20 years, pushed back English settlements, and was never caught. His example would live on.

  • Discipline +5.0%
Father Le Louter:

With the English putting more and more pressure on Wabanaki/Acadian lands, it would be Le Louter who would bring both Acadians and Wabanaki together in a fight for their survival. Catholic Wabanaki would fight incorporating new French tactics.

  • Development Cost -20.0%
Acadian infrastructure:

New tools, new crops, new roads, and new animals would benefit the Wabanaki. With the Acadians working hard in and around Wabanaki villages, this collaboration would prove beneficial for their neighboring Wabanaki.

Ambition

  • Diplomatic Annexation Coast -10.0%
Ancestral Dawnland:

The fight to keep and get back their lands would prove to be a tireless challenge with the British, Iroquois, and Americans in and around Wabanaki lands. It’s time to take back what is rightfully Wabanaki lands!

I really like this idea. In general I would love for there to be more formable nations and better development for indigenous Americans.

I agree! There seems to be a lot of untapped potential. Some formable nations could really help not only establish strong Native American nations, but also ones that could push back Europeans a bit.

Would be really nice, formable nations are always a fun goal in itself
I agree, and I feel the Native Americans have a lot of potential when it comes to this. They were making massive power plays all around North America, which also includes horses in the plains and guns where ever. I think there could be a way for Natives to claim North American land that is unique to them. Maybe it can still have Euro/Asian colonizers sent to until they become a gov or tec type. It could allow for some new diplo mechanics.
