What's the point of having rebels if they have no effect except in extreme circumstances? They raise the autonomy, stop the the conversion? It's a sad state of affairs that the player must deliberately let a pretender win.

There should be... major effects of rebels capturing a province. I'm all for choices. Harsh treatment is already on the table.

How about reworking the rebel mechanics by making the "accept demands" chart actually meaningful? Similar to warscore, it could be a simple choice of "accept now" and face smaller consequences, or accept later and pay more.

Lets say a rebellion fires and they siege down a province. You could "accept demands" at that point for, dunno, + 20% autonomy. But with each other province they siege down, they demand 10% more (and some other compensation like perhaps mana points or cash) in all provinces they siege down.

I'm all for better rebel mechanics however sometimes gameplay trumps realism and when i mean gameplay i really mean "the Ai". Could they handle a complex system that requires rebel suppression etc. etc as above?

Short answer: Of course!

A properly programmed AI should be able to handle every gameplay mechanic that isn't too complex for a human player. Bare in mind that the AI in EU4 can cheat to fix a lack in "intelligence" (no naval attrition).

So an AI not being able to play the new rebel mechanics shouldn't be an argument to dismiss such ideas.

As far as I know, the Accept Demands option was deliberately eviscerated to be identical to letting the rebels Enforce Demands because coding the AI to use AD properly was adjudged too hard.
