I'd love to try 1.03, but it doesn't work!

I downloaded 1.03 installer program and put it in my HOI directory:
C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Hearts of Iron\

I try to install it, but it says, "To install the patch you must have the game installed. You do not have the game installed!"

?????

Have you moved your HoI folder from the original destination(the one you installed it in)? Then you'd get something like that(I'm talking from own experience. Long ago, of course! ).

Or the installer might not find your installation at another station than C:\ (if you haven't installed it there, of course).

You downloaded the Panvision version of the patch. Take a look at some of the other threads on the NA 1.03 patch for info on downloading it.

You might try the support forum, very friendly in there.

95% of the time this is caused from having the wrong version of the patch.
