I'd like support-divisions / detachments to be feasible

Many units in WW2 never served as integrated parts of divisions but rather as detached regiments or battalions that were sent to where they were most needed. German "schwere Panzer-Abteilungs" is one example as well as many corps-level artillery units.

In the game as it is now, I can create a division as a single battalion, but it will not perform well at all in combat. I think that the combat system should could be able to handle this by allocating it to the divisions it shares the battle with.

A thought is for us to be able to set a division to be a "detachment". A detachment should only be able to be one regiment in size and when they enter combat, they will be temporarily distributed among the other divisions in the battle. That way, we will be able to have our specialized detachments that we can send to parts of the front we want to reinforce without having too much micro. It would add both immersion and flexibility.

Does the scale of the game really suit this?

The lowest level commander is a general with up to 24 divisions. Who commands the regiment?

I think it would be way too much micro. Can you imagine trying to micro Tiger regiments to support your divisions as Germany vs USSR in a multiplayer game on speed 3?

You could duplicate one of your templates to add a few heavy armor divisions and just change the template of the fielded divisions to the edited one in a front that needs those tanks and change it back later when they're no longer needed.

The exp loss could be a issue however.

Without the One Ring to find them and in the darkness bind them (an OOB system) the HOI4 ai would shuffle these split Kampfgruppes or Combat Commands all over the place and you would spend all day trying to regroup them if you wanted to. And an ai nation would just scatter them all over the world.

You can make smaller templates to your heart's content, just don't expect much immersion or sense of an OOB. Best you can do is put them all under a General or Field Marshall and make small front lines to keep everyone together, but then you are designing your fronts for cosmetic flavor rather than for objective reality.

I reckon support battalions; like Corps and Army support could work if built into Army HQs and auto distributed to combat; with some possible player preferences. Bit like GG War in the East. The biggest abstraction is that they would all be in the current Army unit.
