Ok , so weather mode tells me if its snowing, raining or stormy. But how can I tell wether a province is "Icy"? The AI seems to know, but sure as hell I can't. Am I missing something obvious?

Not only is it a drawback - it's also a brain fart by the designers that there is no temperature display. Would have been easy to make, I think.

Considering how much effort both sides put into weather forecasts, it's kind of disappointing that part isn't in HOI it all. I mean - phew! - practically all the WW2 sims 10 to 20 years ago included that...

My technique... is to look around the world map (or just the continent I'm operating in, whatever) and get a good visual understanding of where (at what latitude) the weather fronts border on rain vs. snow. Typically, everything at & above that line is going to be icy, and - even a little further south a bit, if it's mountains.

If there's no weather fronts anywhere to be seen in the region - well, tough - use your best guess. Not being able to SEE the ground conditions in the province your troops are right next to (or heck, even the province they're in) never made any sense to me. All to often, I arrive at a battle, and it's frozen... I then say, "Gee, that would have been nice to know".

This same problem applies to muddy ground conditions, particularly in Russia. Ahh, the Rasputitsa in the middle of June. I wonder how the real Barbarossa got under way at all...

As for the east front IRL the effect of bad weather can hardly be overstated. And at that point I find HOI to simulate quite well.

I agree that mud was a huge problem in real life, but there is no connection between muddy ground conditions and the weather in a particular territory. It is solely dependent on the time of year. The change occurs at the beginning of a new month. This same is true for icy conditions. If it hasn't rained or snowed for a month, how can it all of a sudden become muddy or icy?

IRL it only takes a couple of hours to reach a state of muddy-ness or icy-ness. Normally I just look at the weather map and if it is snowing in the province or nearby I figure that there is a good chance of ice. Otherwise I depend on the seasons.

Yes, but if there is *** no *** precipitation whatsoever... Besides, I have seen many times rain or snow exist in a province for just a few hours.

The game calls the condition "Frozen". You don't need snow for the ground to freeze. What matters is that it's very cold. Snow tends to improve this situation because the clouds and snow stop the earth's heat from radiating out into space. It gets very cold in the Sahara desert at night because the sky is so clear.

I agree that this weather effect could be improved but how is it a big problem? You can see the effect as an icon during the battle. If a battle is going badly because of this then call it off before serious losses are taken.

And note that Winter Specialists now work as they should so use that type of leader if you've got them. And Arctic Equipment, of course.

But still, if there's going to be a significant penalty like that - which would certainly be something you could easily know IRL - the game should give you some way of knowing what you're getting into.

The Germans knew that it gets cold and muddy in Russia. They still got into trouble. IRL weather is fickle and it's not so easy to get it right. The Germans thought that the bad weather meant that there was no way that the Allies would be landing on 6 June. That's why Rommel went home for his wife's birthday. But there was a break in the weather on that day which meant that the landings went ok. But there was a storm 3 weeks later which caused chaos and destroyed a Mulberry.

Everyone complains about the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it!
