I stopped using ICQ in 97 when I had to manually reenter every single ICQ number after a clean OS installation (format c :) for the 3:rd time.
Have the managed to fix this by making a separate savefile with all the numbers yet ?

Warspite,

Afraid I am with Huszics on the ICQ issue...
However I would be interested in MP, and doubly so if you are west coast-US. If there is a better version of ICQ I will consider re-upping. My e mail in on my profile.

I reformat my drive at least once a month so I just copy the whole ICQ directory somewhere else and then put it back on the newly formatted/os installed drive. Reinstall ICQ where you copied the old directory and register the existing user again. Finalize by running the Database Converter. This works great with ICQ 2000a and 2000b.

Thanks Patric, I'll think I'll go and download ICQ right away.
However I still consider it outright moronic that there still isn't a config/savefile option in ICQ. Whatever OS the programers use personally it shure can't be an MS one, or this would have bee in included in the very first betas.

Well, I have to say that on my computer EU and ICQ don't like each other at all.....
If I have them both running and try 'alt-tab' EU crash......

Using the EU 'chat lobby' is excellent though ;-) You just need one player with a static IP.... Like me ;-)

BTW shouldn't this thread be moved to the new MP section ?

Reformatting every month? Crikey, Papa Patric, I can barely be arsed formatting every 12 months. I'm as lazy as a Swede in Hawaii.

It steems from Windows (not NT, which is a lot better) beeing an extreemly instable OS. Lot of hidden away registrys that can be (and does get) messed up, especially if you install and remove a lot of soft & hardware.

Once you get the hang of it it's actually quite easy and definitly much faster to do a clean install then trying to track down & repair the the stuff that's broken.

For me it takes just over 1h to do a clean sweep, ie format c:, OS install (windows CD copied to HD ofcourse) and installing drivers & the software I use.

This is also why I prefer NS as a mail & browser program. Your able to save you profile in the folder/partition of your choise.
IE OTOH saves it's stuff all over the place on the system partition!! Byebye mails & internet links if you do a format c:.
After you reinstall NS/mozilla you just point it to your profile and everything looks exactly the same. This is the feature I'm missing in ICQ.

I have several ready made HD images (Norton Ghost) so I can switch O/S in about 5 minutes. Still have to install whatever it is I want to use but it takes almost no time at all. The Ghost images has all the drivers and all the utils I use the most already installed. Very convenient :)
