I mostly play in Africa, Middle East and Asia though currently i thought I would have a change by playing as England. Hardly touch European nations as a rule.

For major dlc I've only used Art of War, Common Sense and Cossacks. Only recently added Mandate of Heaven which is great for a stable Ming and Rights of Man.

If anything, I play more RoTW than Europe. I suppose if you count Muscovy and Ottos as "Europe", it might be a bit closer, but I tend to end up in ME a lot, with the occasional India or Africa.

The campaigns I actually play to 1821 are pretty much all RoTW.
But to play correctly the count of Muscovy or the sultan of the Ottomans you have to know a lot of their culture and their country do you? I am am sure most of us dont do it. But I confess it is a possibility to learn a lot of these countries.

Forum or Reddit doesn't represent player base as a whole. Players outside of Europe mostly don't have an account in these platforms because of language. But European players still predominate most likely and again that's because of language! (Supported languages in-game are all European as you know)

Well, I don't know about other people, but I've just started a game in Europe, after having not started in Europe for nearly 2 years. I vastly prefer ROTW, due to the more varied gameplay, as well as not having to worry about the game of thrones mechanic (AKA PUs) throwing alliances into the trash.

I actually kept a record of my games. So here is the breakdown of my games:
Europe: 6
Asia: 8
Africa: 3
America: 4 (including one in the Random New World)

And by starting religion:
Catholicism: 5
Sunni: 5
Hinduism: 3
Orthodox, Animist, Theravada, Nahuatl, Mayan, Coptic, Inti, Shintoism: 1

So I am pretty spread out on all positions over the world. And I am doing so intentionally, since playing in the same region quickly bores me.

Amazing you must be really polyglot and firm in so many religions. I myself confess that I can only distinguish the several christian and muslim religions. And by the way I speak only some european languages. So I prefer to play those countries of which I understand their events (yes most of them are english) but if you play e.g. a lowland country do you understand:Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie; Vereenigde Geoctroyeerde Oostindische Compagnie. I suppose not I am yust beginning to learn a bit Dutch because I want to understand those terms ok it is for me as a german not so difficult but difficult enough. But learning an asian language...
So playing in your familiar habit/surroundings is of my opinion normal. As I gather from your profile you bought nearly all DLCs and that was my main impetus for that thread.
Do you profite from all of them? Are they worth if you play mainly european countries? Thank you in advance:)

You do not really need to understand Quenya to enjoy the Lord of the Rings movies. Instead, the Tolkien novels and movies are so good that you might feel like to learn Quenya afterwards.

The same goes for EU4. You play the game first, then decide whether or not to delve in the historical or cultural or religious details. I am recently interested in the Ahom script (just the script, not the language). Without this game I would have probably never heard of it.

Pretty much Europe only for me. I've done runs outside of it, but they were mostly uncompetitive and ultimately cut short because I found them unfun or broken.

It's very difficult for me to get any sort of interest in any area outside of Europe. I feel no connection to it, the gameplay often feels either more bland (India) or flat-out worse (Japan with its insane number of bugs and spaghetti code instances), and I care very little for achievements and the like.

how many of you are playing a non-european country.
The background of my question is that we got in the last time always asian DLCs. Normally I install all the newest DLCs but now I am not sure if these one are of any use for me.
Sadly unlike in former times there are no poll about our favorite nations here in that forum which I would like to see or better reactivate.
But perhaps PDX nows already which country we are playing what I doubt.

i think typically a new player learns the game in europe, and then considers buying some dlc.

once they feel confident they learned europe well, they usually try out ROTW next, or stay in Europe for a LONG time and maybe even attempt smaller nations.

I think majority stays in Europe for a LONG while though, before trying out non christian religions or nations.

And when he masters the game, he starts playing countries like Ryukyu, Yeren, Naxos (well this is an European one), Jangladesh and Haida :D

This statement I can completely emphasize.
And often one tries to learn more about the culture and history of the played country by Wikipedia or anything else.
Long time ago when EU didnt belong to PDX(I am not sure) a french teacher wrote that he used that game for his historical lessons. I think that is still today a valid statement.

But perhaps PDX nows already which country we are playing what I doubt.

They know whom you play with, and much more than that. Every now and then, they post statistics of their games, or at least talk about them.

Long time ago when EU didnt belong to PDX(I am not sure) a french teacher wrote that he used that game for his historical lessons. I think that is still today a valid statement.

EU Video Games always belonged to Paradox. It's the EU board game that officially did not belong to them (maybe you're talking about it, seeing as it was a French Board Game).

I primarily play in Europe, but I like to dabble in RotW from time to time. I do really enjoy playing as Japan (I was waiting for Japan to get fixed for ages before MoH came out) and the Hordes, and creating Persia has been a blast this patch. Come to think of it I haven’t touched Europe in a while, too busy playing with the newer Asia stuff :D
