Make up a country can be fun. Like eg, hoi2 with a large macedonia or something.

As for what to play and what game.... that's up to you. Which game are you most comfortable with and/or do you want to explore? If you're good at the game, pick a smaller nation for challenge. If not so good, pick a bigger one.

To be perfectly cynical, if you want to get the maximum comments you are best off:

Choosing a EUIII or a HoI2DD game

Choosing a Grand Campaign

Choosing some smaller nation OR Germany. Do not pick USA or USSR.

Pretend you are having troubles but end up conquering the world anyway; just make sure you conquer the world closer to the end of the game span than the beginning of it.
