This post is mainly for Hearts of Iron 4 but can be with EU4 too. I just want to say I never play on ironman mode on EU4 so I don't get any achievements. I don't play on ironman mode not because I want to save scum or its to hard. I don't play because I want to save the game at a point because something interesting is happening or a major event or war and I want to go back to that point and mess around with it. For example in the hungry games stream, I would love to have saved the game (with ironman mode on so I can get achievements) then keep playing as hungry and lose. After I lose I would like to go back to that save and play as Germany since Germany was very much weakened and see if I could still hold my own and defeat Russia and britian. I wouldn't want to get achievements just to be able to go back and have fun. I would really like the ironman mode to be revised in which you can save just when you load up that save you can no longer get achivements. I just want paradox to read this and atleast think about and I hope they could improve ironman mode. Thank you for reading.

So in short basicly create a non-ironman savegame while playing a ironman save. Interesting idea actually, i wonder how/if that works. Then again, that would still allow cheating by testing stuff in the non-ironman save.

I love the concept of Iron Man mode and getting the Three Mountains achievement was some of the most fun and frustrating experiences I've ever had in gaming (14 restarts and a lot of profanity to get that one right). With that said the system that exists in CK2, EUIV and Stellaris make Iron Man mode itself a total pain in the arse. For the first two it saves after virtually EVERY decision made as well as days and for Stellaris it saves on a timer basis that isn't very long; this slows the game to a crawl during peace time when you set the game to the fastest pace during peace time (during war it doesn't matter since you are "pause, play, pause, play"-ing all the time). I love the concept of Iron Man mode but until it's ironed out (no pun intended) I'd actually support achievements not being an Iron Man necessary requirement.

With that said, I'll be playing that for every game I play because I do love the challenges their achievements set before me.

Ironman concept in the current format is a joke, adds almost nothing to the game

I disagree with this assessment; Ironman adds the feature to intentionally, in advance, not be allowed to save-scum.
One thing that I don't like about Ironman (at least in Stellaris for me, probably in HoI4 too) is that it requires you to have an internet connection and save to the cloud. This is probably to not let people mess with the files, but I play offline a lot of the time and it's no problem in non-Paradox games. Not a big issue, though, just frustrating.

There is so many game that provides achievements without Ironman....

I fully agree it is unfair to bind it to that feature. SAve scum or not, achievements are a private endavour anyhow. Is there anyone who really check someone else's? Then why prevent them from cheaters?

Nope, it does not stop save scumming, in CK2, you have a 3 month scumming window. I don't know the EU IV scumming window, since never played it (can't accept the lucky nation concept.) Stellaris is smaller (maybe a month), but still you can scum a little.

My idea behind this is that to solve the cheating aspect you could not play as the nation you started with. You could only play with them after you finished the ironman game. Lets say you are invading Russia and you want to see how bad you'll do in the winter you would go in and play as Russia, but this in my opinon is not cheating because of how random it will be. The ai for Germany could say "balls to the wall" and do a center push and get cut off while if you were playing you would not do this or the ai may take a good bit of units on the eastern front and put them to the west.

For some players, the warm feeling of completing a challenge.
So it does not unlock a bonus feature, or discount or anything like that?

No, they're more or less cosmetic, like a sprite pack, completely un-affecting the game both inside and out.

That would make ironman a joke.
Save it as non ironman to test a strategy/a risky gamble..
Then continue with the ironman save.
Ironman actually IS a joke. I really don't get why some people are so intrigued by Achievements which are in fact worth nothing. If you wanna prove your skills you play MP.

Why do people collect coins from different countries, or post stamps?
Probably the same reason people collect achievements, because the feeling of 'getting more and more' is generally a good feeling.

It's clearly not for everyone, but there's some people (including me) who really like the challenge of collecting those achievements, even though they don't 'give you anything extra'.
