I'm hoping to set up a peaceful game, where all the civilizations get along and there has been a prosperous peace for hundreds of years. So peaceful in fact that many of the civilizations are very lax in their military. unbeknownst to them all, I'm building a secret army, disguised as pirates or perhaps another faction, and send them out on guerrilla attacks. Nobody knows it's me, until eventually I strike with full might, and the other civilizations quake in fear. Muuuaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaa........

Think any of this would be possible?

Why do you keep posting this?

http://steamcommunity.com/app/281990/discussions/0/357284767232040627/

I could have swore you made this post a few days ago in Steam and then deleted it.

It is still in steam, and this is a different forum. "Keep posting it", as if I'm spamming it everywhere? No, this is a different forum and I can post the same thing in both places if I choose... What's it to you?

The lack of indirect warfare is too nice... why can't there be subterfuge and diabolical-ness in these games. They play too nicely by the rules. In reality, if I were to take over as a despot, I wouldn't play by the rules. There should be no rules in war... When the aliens come to invade our planet for real, are we going to say "You can't do that without getting permission first..."? I think not.

Is the military information visible to everyone, like the strength of your armies/fleets etc? It would be nice if you could hide stuff in nebula to build it up and no-one would know or be able to judge how powerful you were unless there is some form of espionage... in which case everyone will love you and be your friend and trust you before you attack them all at once... but you'd probably struggle to get a reason to go to war with a friend.

'Cause its a game. Not reality.

It needs to play by some sort of internal logic.

You can't decide not to be an empire and just be a pilot and his lovely sidekick adventuring through space looking for adventure, either.

Other space nations are not going to be unarmed, they are not going to let you conduct secret wars against them, and if you did they'd just take it as a declaration of war anyway.

I understand I'm playing an empire type of game, and not a solo rocket jockey looking for adventure. But war is not nice, and it's not played by rules. Subterfuge is a real thing. History is riddled with skirmishes and even wars started by someone else as a manipulation. It's the plot of many books and movies, getting Empire A to fight with Empire B so Empire C can mop up and gain the spoils and take over both weakened empires. And I'm not talking basic espionage like in other games, but all out manipulation. Think Senator Palpatine in Star Wars...

Don't you mean Russia and Ukraine? Eastern Ukraine is controlled by "separatists" but it's mostly Russian soldiers with their badges removed, some local civilians, and also other foreign fighters. I think that works great as a "today" example.

The devs have already said the espionage won't be in the game from the start, it might be added later. And i doubt that we'll ever have what you're talking about. As it would be extremely hard to added to this kind of game. (Or so i imagine).

Yeah well, there won't ever be a century-long peaceful period that you can create a malevolent faction to ruin. When we get espionage it'll just be a way to give penalties and bad events to enemies and to gain intel.

What the OP envisions isn't going to be a thing, since actual direct military conflict will be required to start invasions. You can't pretend to be another faction, etc and nobody's buying Russia's "were not hitting them!" routine anyway.

Overall, what's proposed does not make sense in a galaxy with symmetrical starts.

A very valid point... I'll probably try modding it so the other empires are totally friends and peaceful as they build up, then in mid-game reveal myself to be the villain of the story. Heavy modding and console cheating to get the universe to the point where I can be such a villain...
