On another note, so far HOI4 is pretty shocking.

You can't even release puppets.

That's kinda expected, heck the game timeline stops in 1946, they just released the game on beta stage to milk with DLCs

my place is here in the DH community, each FREE update comes with more content than a paid DLC of other paradox games :D

Am I the only one who dislikes the new 3d terrain and map of the Clausewitz engine? IMO if you have to do 3d then you have to match other games (TW, CIV 5, etc.) to avoid having your game look like it was made in 2005. A properly done 2d terrain and map can easily beat a badly done 3d terrain and map.

I'm indifferent to the water effects, it's not like my fleet moving through it gives any notworthy realism. I'd much rather see my troops moving from province to province. I could care less about 3D water effects. A Pdox title shouldn't make my computer's fan work harder and make my comp hotter than it gets than Skyrim with HD revamp mods running (not much at all).

Well said, I have a computer that can run any game on the current market with high end graphics, yet Darkest hour never grows old. Its in its own league, pretty much any crappy PC can run Darkest hour that's the beauty in this classic strategy game yet you will always come back for more.

I've had DH for a while but I could never figure out what to do as I know very little of how WWII played out. HOI IV has a gentler learning curve though less depth, but I already feel like I could fire up DH now and have fun.

The two brands don't have to be mutually exclusive, it would be cool if Paradox helped to spruce up the old engine. I find the DH map is much clearer close up, but zooming out loses the cool dynamic borders of the Clausewitz engine, and it looks quite ugly with the plain white margins.

Honestly, I like HoI4's production and combat a lot better than DH's. But the poor politics and diplomacy(other than peace conferences) are going to force us to event or fluff a lot of stuff. Internal politics are going to be harder to represent. Hopefully we can extend the tech tree without the interface going bonkers, too. But National Focuses and the modding tools they released are going to make KR really fun to develop on HoI4. I feel like HoI4's greatest weakness is that it can't decide if it's a WWII game or a WWII-era GS game.

I had to tweak some power settings for my gfx card as HoI4 made it sound like it was a helicopter about to take off. Borderless window mode also helps. :D

I second, err well somewhere between second and twenty-ninth that emotion.

I'd urge anyone who doesn't have DH who has $10 to give them a swing. I'm 100% satisfied with this game in a way AAA devs have not satisfied what I hope for in the game they pitch. This game has for a WWII strategy game what most top titles lack even with a year's worth of an active modding community (if they even let them do it).

Heh, I was going to ask "where can I donate $10", then I remembered this isn't a mod but a game. It's my most played HoI game by far (own all of them), and I've purchased it twice so I'm in the clear.

HOI IV made me reinstall DH and HOI3 again.

Back to the good days!!

New HoI games get me into the mood for WW2 games, but PDX always fails on launch so I go back to the best.

It doesn't stress my god-computer (man I love her, maybe it should be goddess-computer), but I agree. In a strategic war game all I need is a flat 2D map and unit chits. It works perfectly well for my board games so it should work far better with a computer game with many more options to make it lively. So for me it's not that my computer can't run it (though I can see that is a major problem for many people), it's just I don't need it and don't want to see it.

HOI IV has a gentler learning curve though less depth,
I'm a bit split.
I like that Paradox can release a new, fun and good game that makes waves and generate more money for them.
On the other hand, There's something to DH, they even used it at a military academy for christ sakes. It scratches my strategy itch, mainly BECAUSE it can be unforgiving.
yet Darkest hour never grows old. Its in its own league, pretty much any crappy PC can run Darkest hour
I agree! there's something about the look that only gets better with age. It makes me feel like i'm there looking at a map in 1940. And any old computer can boot it up.
