There's rather a lot written about Napoleon, so it would help if you could be a bit more specific about what you're looking for. An overview of his life? An analysis of his campaigns? Something else?

Hi,
I knew that someone would tell me it is lots of books out there.. I mean, it must be.

Well. This might be the hard thing. I want a book mostly covering the time era, maybe not napoleons childhood. I would like to read about the politics, the wars and all stuff that is around it. Isn't there some essential book on the Napoleon era?

Not everybody like this book, but I would reccomend David Chandler's "Campaigns of Napoleon". It's far from perfect, but I don't know about any other single volume book which is better for the broad picture... (it won't tell you much about the peninsular war though, since it only covers the campaigns where Nappy was present in person)

Sometimes wish there was a napoleonic equivalent of Shelby Footes' american civil war triology (which is not the "best" civil war books, but certainly the most entertaining)

Another great book on the Napoleonic period is Col John Eltings "Swords around a throne". It won't give you the entire picture, but you won't find a better book on the grande armee...

Unfortunately not much politics. Chandler's book do give you a short overview of the political situation that led to the different wars, but it mainly focuses on the military campaigns.

Haven't read this one myself, but you might want to check out
J. Christopher Herold's "The Age of Napoleon"
