I'm reading a book on Burgundy, by Bertrand Schnerb (you maybe know of it, tough I don't think it has been translated, it's been written 5 years ago), and he's among the ones prefering to call Charles "the Bold" rather than "the Rash", mostly because all adjectives given to monarchs (or near-monarchs, like the Dukedom) are "good" adjectives (Bold, Just, Fearless, August, the Sage, etc), not "bad" (like Rash).
Hehehe, would that include Æthelred the "Unready" (correctly meaning "lacking in good rede, or counsel" and John "Lackland"? ;)

I suppose those authors would change their adjectives too. Tough I don't know any of them two. Who were they ? I suppose Aethelred was a pre-Hastings anglo-saxon lord or king, right ?

Right.
And John Lackland, come on, of course you know him. Brother of Richard the Lionheart? Signed the Magna Charta? Shows up in Robin Hood tales as well?

So, that's his english name ? I didn't know how it translated. :eek:o

Hmmm, "Lackland" doesn't design his mind or competency, but rather the fact that his french suzerain deprived him of his fiefdoms, so that's not kind of "judging" him. :)

There are a lot of negative names given to monarchs, in my opinion. Charles the Fat, Ivan the Terrible - those aren't entirely good.
"Ivan the Terrible" is a very unfortunate translation into English rather than a negative name.

What about Charles the Bad? That sounds like a derogatory title to me.

Who is that? I know of Charles the Bald, but not Charles the Bad.

Keep in mind that not all names are given by later historians, but by contemporaries. Yes, like today's press, they often had an agenda, but still some names were reflective of what they saw at the time.

And besides, there is always Joanna the Mad. Things could be worse than being Bald or Rash.

"Charles the Fearless?" I'm sure you mean Charles the Rash (though some more polite people give him the same handle has his Great-grandfather, Philip the Bold). His grandfather was John the Fearless. It was Charles' rash

These more polite people would include the Dutch (and the Flemish I think). In dutch both Philip the Bold and Charles have got the surname 'de Stoute', which (as far as I understood) was more or less equivalent with 'the Bold'

Don`t forget Wilhelm Garlic of Saxony (no joke).

Poor bastard. Great military leader, until he one day rode into a conquered city, and promptly got squashed when he got the city gate in his head.

In Scandinavia there are a lot of derogatory names on monarchs, Bluetooth, Barefoot, Hardrule(Hardråde), Twobeards (Tjugeskjegg) springs to mind, but I know there are more.

Now for some characters from the Norwegian Civil wars: Erling the Crooked, Magnus the blind, Øystein "the little girl", Inge Humpback, Sigurd Evil-clergyman, Håkon Broadhips, Sigurd Mouth etc. Sounds like mob wars. :D :D :D

Hello

I want just say that I am playing 1.02 ver.

Well, don't. Granted, there are some issues with MP vs SP in the latest patches, but 1.02? I suggest you upgrade to 1.06, at least, forthwith.

But those are not judgments on their actions (except Hardrule I suppose, but that's not necessarily a bad thing ;) ). They are physical descriptions.

Charles the Bad, of Navarre I suppose ? IIRC, it's "Bad" not because of his skills, but his "evil-ways", isn't it ? And Charles the Fat was, well, rather fat, so it's a physical description (like Baldwin the Leper-King).

OTOH, "Rash" is a negative-quality, describing someone whose hasty actions triggered his doom. Of all the monarchs you've told, only Aethelred has an adjective negatively-judging his actions (and as an anglo-saxon, he was a loser of history, much like Burgundians ;) ).

This save wouldn't work under 1.06 ver, would it?
Much changes, fixes, tweaks, bug-corrections, have been done. I'd go for 1.08, and start anew. But you can still try to load your save under a later patch, and if it doesn't work, either reverts to 1.02 to finish your game, or start anew with 1.08. ;)

Also there are the Danish kings Olaf Hunger and Harald Hein (Wetstone), both of these are very bad and hinting to bad rulership. And Barefoot was hinting to an incident of cowardice. Thereby rather derogatory.

Hunger ? to be hungry ? bad rulership ? Could you explain a bit ?
Whetstone ? I don't see what it could depict applied to a King. I need enlightenments too (yes, indeed, I'm no expert on scandinavian history) ;) .

So, until now, I only see Charles the Rash and Barefoor as judging rulership.

BTW, why "the little girl" for Oysten ?

-Bad rulership, he was blamed for a widespread famine.

.

He was considered a push-around, whom everybody could use for their own purposes.

BTW:-The term "the Good" was sometimes used on kings that were in the pocket of the nobility(aka weak) so it is sometimes ironic. "Yes Charles, you are such a good boy aren`t you. Yes, such a good boy! Walkies!" :D
