Let me refine your idea. There should only be one tiny flag, and it should appear over one of the buildings in the biggest town in the province.
And it should be done to look as if it was actually hoisted on the building, rather than just floating above it. There's no better way to allocate resources than making sure this works well. :p
And of course it is absolutely necessary that it flutters very nice in the wind, and that the direction and speed of fluttering changes as if there is actual weather. This IS the best use of time for the devs

I think if it was still stripes with one flag in the middle it would actually be pretty nice. You know what, an option for a single flag above or below the name would be ok too.

I get the desire to try something new and more spicy with the occupation stripes and a way to associate flags with their countries easier but it has to come from a good mechanical UI design point first and foremost.

Flag occupation is still terrible. If you are not convinced, try to figure out what the Japanese Shogunate is occupying or to make sense of a war with France, Netherlands, and Russia involved

How was this not mentioned in the upcoming stuff, when so much of what was mentioned was noted as something that was generically "upcoming"? Hello again, that time of the month(s) it seems. Yep, still hate flag occupation!

Here to register my continued annoyance at the existence of this design choice. Sadly with each passing week and each DD that goes up, I'm growing increasingly certain that they're not gonna do anything about it. How was this not mentioned in the upcoming stuff, when so much of what was mentioned was noted as something that was generically "upcoming"? It's concerning that this isn't something anyone seems to be working on.
It worries me as well. Maybe since the change is graphical in nature it isn't 'big' enough to be mentioned yet? Or maybe I'm just huffing copium...

My opinion as well. Not just related to the use of flag, but sometimes if I need to zoom in close to find out what provinces are exactly occupied or why a front is split, the flag occupation will disappear and only the terrain will be shown. It's very annoying.

Don’t mind me just agitating for a change to the flag occupation graphic.

If it works for Vicky 2, EU4, and CK3, why not Vicky 3? In fact, since Vicky 3’s flags are arguably more dynamic than in those games (see the entire Dev Diary just about dynamic flags!) it is more important in this game than in any other that something other than the oft-changing flags be used to designate occupation.

Honestly I wouldn’t mind it except that the minuscule tessellation effect is very jarring, noisy, and “busy” compared to the map, which is either the soft, pastel watercolor far view, or the realistic, natural-toned terrain close view. Either way it is inconsistent with the map’s aesthetic and stands out like a sore thumb. Yes, the flags in Vicky 3 are cool, but the occupation graphic barely lets you tell what the flag looks like anyway. It transforms even the simple and iconic French tricolore into a crazy quilt.

A happy medium could be to use the stripe occupation, and then have a fun little graphic when you zoom into a State, showing off the occupant’s flag. This could be the flag being waved around (kind of like the current Turmoil graphic), or just a static terrain feature (a big ass flag sticking out of the land/an occupied city).

Or, crazy thought, a game setting. Please?

I feel that the stylized maps (flags, mascots, or icons) work for static images where the creator of the material has the opportunity to manually adjust the image before going to production. Without that step it has a high probability of being a jumbled mess that is hard to interpret.

Just making sure that the renewed silence in this thread isn't taken as acceptance again.

I feel that the stylized maps (flags, mascots, or icons) work for static images where the creator of the material has the opportunity to manually adjust the image before going to production. Without that step it has a high probability of being a jumbled mess that is hard to interpret.


Oh, and by the way Devs, I still don't like flag occupation even after playing more since the last time I posted that I don't like this.

There is a *lot* to take in here, but I'm very curious why there's a random skull on the Ottoman's knee in the Caucuses, the sharks on the edge of Russia. or what is in the gap between the German kneeling and the russian boot in Konigsberg/Kaliningrad

The theme of the map is angling (fishing) so a lot of fish in there which I believe is where they have expanded or are expanding? Possibly a difference between being in hand and on the line.
