So I decided to start a "good guy" game and lean hard into research. Not fully "tall", but to try to give myself an edge.

I'm running pacifist, xenophile, spiritual.

For the traits, I have +1 leader rank (1 pt), +15 years life (1 pt), bonus to all research (2 pt) and -10% habitability (-2pt)

I have only played for a few hours. Of course, my closest neighbors are expansionist jerks, as always happens when you play as peaceful. I've also snagged a system with an early space age race (though they are xenophobes, we'll see how that goes)

I'm waaaay ahead on tech compared to my other runs. Unlocked all the lvl 2 research buildings and lvl 2 power plant. Unlocked all kinds of tech to speed up research and construction time.

Already have basic terraforming unlocked, though it seems useless so far. I think I need other tech.

I'm a bit further behind militarily than I would like, though I have destroyers unlocked. Sitting at about 800 right now. With room for one more destroyer, I think. Though I just got some new weapon tech that should buff them all up.

My big issue right now is that I have been forced to expand faster than I would like because of my neighbor, the pre-hyper civilization and the need for energy (thanks to my neighbor). So I have three frontier stations out before I could get even a single colony made. As a result, I'm currently getting zero influence gain.

I kind of got annoyingly good luck in one respect. Three of the routes into my territory are blocked by mineral swarms. Ruby, emerald...and I forget the third. They are effectively covering my rear so I don't have to fortify as much. I did a test war (I don't care about achievements) against one swarm because I really want the habitable planet there, but I got stomped. Reloaded, I'll save that for later.

My neighbor is going to be a problem, though. He's already declared me a rival and I have closed my borders. I suppose I can get an influence point back by making him my rival, as well. But I'm not sure how my pacifist pop will feel about that.

My request for help here is not specific. Just anything you see in all of this that you think would help out or that you think a noob may not know. And I, sir, am a noob.

So much happening in this fantastic game, that you don't always know what you don't know.

Continue trying to stay ahead of the tech game as it can really give you an edge over everyone else. If you are playing a tall play style, try to get at least five planets so I would definitely recommend taking out that hostile fleet guarding a planet. If you do declare war on your neighbor, either try to vassalize them or liberate all their planets so you can have a friend to watch your back.

Dumb little clarification. The swarm only fires projectiles. Do I want shields or armor against that?

Armor is what you would want to use. Shields are used against laser weapons. But you should always still have some shields on your ships.
