I thought I knew what the issue was, but I was wrong.

For a long time I have been having a problem running CK2 without slowdown or freezing up and I had thought that the issue was my graphics card. yesterday in installed a GEforce GT 430 and the game now runs much faster, however simply changing the the graphics card did not fix the the freezing up that occurs at least once a month (in game) so now I am wondering if there is not some other problem and "having a terrible graphics card" was masking it all this time. My checksum is ICBN and my version is 1.092.

Possible additional data in case this is a bug, I have noticed that the freezes occur on certain dates more than others here is a rough estimate of how often the game will freeze on a date.

18th - 95% chance. if it doesn't freeze on the 18th then it will freeze on the 19th. Every single month.
27th - 40% chance. Higher than normal freeze ups on on the 27th but not every single month.
3rd or 5th. about 20%. at least 2 if not 3 times a year it will freeze on the 3rd or 5th of the month.
16th 5% SUPER SUPER annoying but thankfully rare, the game will freeze on the 16th in addition to the normal freeze on the 18th.

I would really appreciate any help trying to figure this out.

When you say "freeze", do you just mean a slowdown, and it recovers? Or the game hangs and you have to kill it with Task Manager? Either way, we're not seeing this elsewhere.

But if its actually crashing to desktop, that's another thing entirely.

That dxdiag looks fine. Can we see settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload) please.

It does not crash, it freezes, as in time stops all animations stops, I can't scroll across the map, but then about 2-5 minutes later it stops being frozen and runs normally for a few days (in game) until it decides to do it again, during that time the only way to escape is ctl-alt-dlt and if you you do that it says in the task manager that crusader kings 2 is not responding, but since it didn't crash there is no error message.

How do I get the settings, system, and error files?

Look in the MyDocuments CK2 folder. settings.txt is right there, the others are in /logs/ below that.

Are you playing with any mods? Are you absolutely sure that when you load the game without mods, the checksum is ICBN? Because I see this in error.log:

[persistent.cpp:40]: Error: "Malformed token: yes, near line: 474
" in file: "common/traits/00_traits.txt" near line: 481

Which appears to say that file has been edited or is corrupt. Try using the Steam client option Verify Game Cache Files , run that until it finds nothing to fix.

Aha! You ARE using a mod

Do you get this problem while not running this mod?

I get the problem whether there is a mod on or not. I am more concerned about making sure that vanilla works, if after the issue is fixed in the normal game and I still can't get mods to work, then I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

The lines that are giving errors in the traits file are just congenital traits that say birth = yes, I can verify the game files but I do not know why that would cause this issue.

They should say birth=50 or some other number ... ? But I agree, I don't see why this, although possibly a problem in itself, would be causing your main issue. I'm just looking for anomalies, that's all. In fact I'm struggling to imagine why it would be freezing on those particular dates at all.

It definitely says checksum ICBN?

I guess we may as well try a full clean reinstall: move any valued save games elsewhere and uninstall the game from within Steam. Then manually delete ALL the CK2 directories from under BOTH the Steam and MyDocuments folders. Now reinstall the game from Steam, and run the Verify just to make sure it all came down properly.
