I thought having my friendly Bishop made Pope would help me?

I had a great relationship with one of my Bishop's. When he was elected to College of Cardinals I was hopeful, then at just the age of 54 he made Pope. First time one of my guys has been made Pope and since I was in such good terms I planned on taking advantage of that friendship. Mostly I wanted money. But I can't get Silvestor to do anything. No excommunications, no piety for money, buying a favor is way too expensive.

So what happened? What's the point of me campaigning for him and giving him money if he won't do anything for me due to "base reluctance"? Heck, I couldn't even get a divorce decree from him if I wanted one. Ironically, him being made pope HURT me, because all my other Bishops flipped from liking me more than old Pope, to liking Silvester way more. I'd been getting some fantastic income from all those churches.

The college of cardinals and whatever related features are absolutely meaningless unless you want to sponsor a kinsman Pope (which is also mostly insignificant, but has some poetic value I guess) or want to get the "worst possible" Pope (which again is not very meaningful).

If you give him money to support his election he's supposed to have a really high opinion of you, which makes it easy to get claims/money/whatever. I think that it only works if he's a kinsman though - you'll know because once he becomes a cardinal he'll have a special opinion modifier with you.

Thanks so much. So to get a Kinsman Pope, is that anyone in my blood line, or does he have to be more closely related to my current player like a brother?

Did you support his election? If not then he got there on his own so it's normal that he doesn't feel like he owes you anything.

If you paid for his way to the papacy you should see it in the decision modifiers.

It does work, though. I usually make a prince-archbishop asap when I become a king, then I'll throw about 50 gold at his election to cardinal which is already secured due to +200 or more suitability due to secular power. Occasionally and whenever a pope die I check the cardinal screen to see if I have a good candidate, I support him with a few coins if he is promising.

After this I usually earn a pope every few elections, and then I take a tour of Europe to look for people the Church hate... And when you find them the pope's opinion of you don't even matter as you get a +++++ helped him become pope.

The kicker is that the pope needs more than about -15 opinion of this guy to grant you the claim, but there's always a handful of them for me.

Pope is sometimes useful whether you supported him or not, but he's not abusable/exploitable. I try to get my kinsman elected if I can and have free funds to spare, but mostly for flavour.

I haven't tried in a while but making suitable non-legitimized bastards of your dynasty into Bishops/Popes used to be good for a nice opinion boost and some prestige. Just make sure you get them a church title before they have children and start their own dynasty.

I got a pope(non kinsman) elected once. He would do things for me. So I dunno.

If you have a vassal Pope he will do anything for you.
