So I'm playing as Brunei in AoW and I find it a bit ridiculous that in the first 60 years of the game, every single Sunni nation is hostile towards me. The reason: they want all my provinces. I think it has to do with the great number of options one has in forming Malaya (i.e. one can choose pretty much any combination of island sets). It also seems that they are hostile to each other as well. This includes the OPMs, even when I conquer land adjacent to them, even with 5X their land forcelimits and 10X their navy.
On the other hand, the non-Malaya forming sultanate of Sulu became threatened as soon as they discovered me.
The result is that there is pretty much no diplomacy between the nations in that region. The Hindus hate the Muslims, and the Muslims hate each other. I'm pretty sure in the real world rulers would've been smart enough to ally to prevent threat from other nations, thus creating some kind of alliance groupings. Right now it plays pretty lame in that sense and only gets fun once you consolidate the region and move on to Vietnam.
