I preordered the game, and I want to say why.

Are you saying that the concept of the naval update is a rumor too or just the specifics? I ask because I'm not sure if any PDX employee has confirmed the naval update itself, or if they have been silent.
As far as I know it have only been mentioned by Youtube videos. Mercs and truce break have been mentioned to get Changes by the developers.

Okay. To be fair, silence would confirm it for me anyway. I would hope that PDX would shut down the rumor immediately if it were not true.

I couldn't agree more. The dual-consul announcement has shown not only that they'll be making necessary changes to the Roman republic, but that PDS takes historicity seriously. The latter part is as important going forward as the fact that there will be a Roman diarchy. Between the two, I'm sold.
The Roman republic was far more than just having two consuls.

I preordered because I've never been disappointed by Paradox games. EU4, CK2, HoI4, Stellaris, Victoria 2 (#gimmievicy3), ALL very very good games. PLUS it's only $50 NZD (like $30USD). Show me a 'AAA' title that costs literally twice as much that you'd get 1,000's of hours of game play out off?? Quality gameplay too, games like Destiny don't count because doing 1,000 hours of strikes to get the perfect roll on a specific shotgun is just stupid.

I got no problem paying $100 to buy a 'AAA' (insert Jim Sterling's voice here) game I know full well I'm gonna play through it, finish it in like 30 hours and never play it again.
So 1,000 hours of game play for $50 is a bargin. even if that $50 extends out to like $150 after DLC.... still worth.

I think some companies you should never preorder (looking directly at you EA), NEVER. But Paradox, meh, up to you. Their track record has been solid for making good games and I know I'm gonna buy it anyway.

All IMO of course, so calm your panties.

The Roman republic was not about having just one consul.
Yes but in the current version there is no tribunes of the plebs who like the consuls held veto Power. There is no cursus honorum or elections to offices and no references the three different election used. No pontifex maximus and so on.

If this is how you base your logic, then good luck to you.

Went up enormously lol. Give over.

I also want to point out that they weren't "listening" to the community about this - two consuls was always the aim, they just had no "fun" way of implementing it so they said the game will be one consul. And they very specifically said "If we ever found a way to make it fun, it would be in a free patch". Which is exactly what has happened, a lot earlier than people expected.

But you guys keep waving your flags and proclaiming that this has saved Imperator Romes preorders. Believe me, the people who refused to pre-order over one consul are in the very small minority. The game would have done fine without you, and it will do fine with you.

Oh my god dude, that is crazy. I straight up do not understand this sentiment. This isn't, like...some kind of political election or something. It's a game. There's no doing well or not doing well. It's just a game that we want to play.

You extremely online types are talking about this stuff like it's the Blue and the Grey clashing bayonets or something. I'm just stoked that there's going to be some historical accuracy in a game set during a delightful period.

Man, this development cycle has gotten toxic. It's put worms in all yall's brains. Just take a breath and wait. It will all be over soon. Like, tomorrow.

I feel like i'm on political Twitter or something when I see nonsense like this.

Most of the things you have mentioned should be in the game. Hopefully future expansions will fill the gaps. EU:Rome had something like the cursus honorum and it worked quite well.

The Roman republic was far more than just having two consuls.

Agreed. And I sincerely hope they continue to add the full glorious spectrum of Roman offices in the game.

I, and I think many others, take the consul decision as a sign that Paradox is at least somewhat committed to modeling a realistic ancient political system as the game continues to get updated.

Man people really hinging entire purchases on one insignificant petty thing huh?
The diarchy is central to the entire Roman identity, and no game about the period could be complete without it. It's the single most important thing they could have implemented in terms of Roman internal politics.

I base my purchase on the totality of the game - a diarchy alone in an otherwise-poor game wouldn't be enough - but the lack of it was most certainly significant enough to not purchase it before the announcement.

I'd love to see how 2 "rulers" will effect game play. Hopefully they make it so the "co ruler" gets loyalty boast or something so he doe's not block you ability to do stuff too much.

It's more about the design philosophy it represents. A commitment to making Imperator into a living, breathing world, as opposed to a dry expansion-based experience.

My vocation is ancient history. It's what I study and it's my life's passion. It matters a great deal to me that this one grand strategy game fit for my field matches the glory and complexity of the Hellenistic Mediterranean.

Besides, why do you care? My concerns are my own. That divisive attitude of yours is toxic and harmful. And I daresay my sentiments represent the concerns of a pretty massive chunk of this forum and the Paradox fanbase more widely. As can be seen in this thread, and all throughout this development cycle.

I mean, judging by my 15 agrees and 6 disagrees, I could make the argument that most people don't care about how many consuls there are.

Sarcasm aside, I doubt most people interested in this game care either. Ancient history might be your vocation, but I'd probably consider myself a decent representative of the more casual ancient Rome fan, (I've played games and watched movies set in ancient Rome, enjoyed learning about it in school, and read a few historical fantasy novels, etc) and I had no idea there were ever two consuls until people started complaining about it on this forum. I would assume there are more people like me, who think Rome is cool and have a passing knowledge of the important stuff without being a scholar about it, who are going to be playing this game than people like you, who are scholars and who have studied it in depth. And to me it seems like a pretty petty thing to refuse to play a game over and to only pre-order because they're going to patch it in at some point in the future.

I don't think having a disloyal co-ruler will stop you from doing things but, just like declaring war without senate approval, it could incur a hit to tyranny.

No dude, you’re missing the point. I made this post because I was excited about a design decision. I am speaking for myself. I don’t give a damn about who like what for what reason.

I am honestly astounded that this post started an argument AT ALL. Petty? What are you even talking about?

I’m not here representing one side in whatever online, asinine, utterly pointless debate you seem to think we’re having. I explained why I, Amyntas, lover of the past, am purchasing a game I was skeptical of. Who cares how many likes you have? What does that have to do with my utter joy at being able to experience Imperator?

This forum is toxic these days. My guess is you’re so primed to leap to the defense of the devs that you’ve worked yourself into a frenzy. Find another target, friend. This was a love letter to Paradox and yet here you are treating it as an attack.

As for your utterly disingenuous point...there are like seven people in this thread who said they bought because of the consul decision. For instance look at the guy beneath you. Come on, dude. So we can throw meaningless anecdotal evidence at each other for a few more hours until the game comes out.

Take a breath. Walk away from the keyboard. You have misread the dynamic, and if you’re looking for a fight why don’t you get a Twitter account?

Not really. It's very easy to ignore these kind of posts as they're few and far between.

Just ignore them and enjoy what you enjoy.

Yeah, you’re probably right. I had kind of hoped this thread would be all about celebrating how we all get to have our cake and eat it too. Seems to have devolved into a proxy war for a larger argument that I really don’t care much for.

I also preordered, though I don't expect this to entertain me to the level CK2 or even EU4 did because this looks like even more of a map painter, but the different mechanics outlined in the dev diaries make it seem like a fun game nonetheless and I expect years of continued updates/expansion as always.
