I'm playing a game as Sweden and I noticed all of the sudden my colonies have their independence desires shooting up by .05 per month. When I check the reasons it says due to 'Situation in Sweden'...

I've looked all over the wiki and cant find anything on it. Anyone know what this 'situation' is, whats causing it, and how I can fix it?

It's to do with your domestic situation. Presumably you're either not doing particularly well in a war, have high war exhaustion, are being faced with rebels or something of that ilk. I'm not sure precisely what determines it, but losing wars and gaining War Exhaustion would seem like logical sources of the problem to me.

Sadly you get war exhaustion even when winning a war. Do colonies inevitably move towards independence then?

The simple answer is yes. The long answer is that eventually Colonies realize that there is very little you can do to keep them in line, especially if you are already losing a war.

Hah, considering the current political "chaos" Sweden is having this is almost too fitting.

I wish they'd just put 'war exhaustion' instead of a vague reference to a situation...

Possibly because it can be other things that triggers it as well? So instead of making different messages they made one generic one.

I don't know. I was just saying that there might be other triggers (now or in the future) for that particular message and that's why it's so vague.

If you keep war exhaustion low, the gain is minimal. I never got any CNs to even 50% in my Portugal game, though I did keep tariffs quite low. Just buy WE down early (after the decisive battles) if it seems like a problem and use mercs when you can.
