Playing Byzantine Empire in 1337 last weekend, when you've got both the Ill-Khanate and the Golden Horde right there, ready to gobble you up. A decade or so later, I had declared holy war on this Anatolian Emirate, when suddenly the Ill-Khanate joined in. I panicked, and planted my assassin in their capital and tried to kill their current leader to get then out of the war. But they just kept rejoining, and I just kept killing (and it kept succeeding)...

And then this happened:

I'm not ashamed to say I haven't played that save since. Figured everyone would get a kick out of this.

Sometimes it is better to use your de jure claims rather than holy wars, so that the big countries of the opposite religion cannot join in. The IK had nothing better to do at that time so they went in to protect the minors. One assassination might have been enough to start a civil war for the new monarch to get him off your back.

What I'd like to know is what that brown down there in Africa is. Is it Abyssinia? I know you started at a later date but seeing how your map has progressed I'm surprised to see that they're still there.

Yeah, that's Abyssinia. Historically they lasted a heck of a long time, but even here they were getting chomped on only years after I started. I think they were fighting a war with the Egyptians and the Yemenis at this point.
