Onto the serious side of this post, I did the whole "Fight both the Aztecs and the Mongols" shenanigan, and of course, got rekted, thus going from 0 to -1000 Gold with all the ensuing joy of brigands, theft and so on.
I was pretty much happy to end this with a :
Died, lost the game. 10/10 would play again.

But then something happened. All my vassals were like : "We know you're in a Dire Straits (Sultaaaans of Swiiiing), here, poor guy, take my 200 gold in exchange for land".

So I got like 1000 gold this way and pretty quickly, and came back positive as if nothing had happened.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to be able to pursue my game, but CK2 got me used to better than this, there was no downside whatsoever to accepting this money (not that I know of).

I went here and there, but saw not literature or knowledge base on this particular topic, so... What gives? Is there really no downside to getting paid by my vassals like this?

Is there a wiki page where this is thoroughly explained?

Did you have the Amass Weath ambition activated?

Vassals can offer 200 gold in exchange for a favor.

Aren't they getting favours from you in return? They might use those favours against you, getting their useless butts on a council seat instead of someone who's actually qualified for the job, or bringing about a law change you're not too thrilled about. Plus that whole "take my 200 gold in exchange for land" bit; your personal lands get smaller (fewer?) and theirs get bigger; they get more powerful while you lose some of your power.

When you go negative you can get an event where you can request 250, 100 or 50 gold from different vassals if they refuse you get an opinion penalty but that's it. If you have WoL and are on business focus you can get a message saying a random burgher (not an actual character either) wants to buy a plot of land for some cash, you don't actually lose any land but it will reduce the taxes in that county for a while, but I didn't think the frequency of this event was tied to bankruptcy.

I have neither Way of Life nor Conclave (it can be seen in my icons under my avatar), nor did I ask for anything, it just ... happened.

So yeah indeed, this seems to be tied to bankrupcy since I never saw that before, and again, was a little disappointed to see that I gained all my money back this way (then again, i'll still have to loose 1000 golds against the Aztecs so...)

Unless I'm missing something in your description of the events, it kind of sounds like you answered your question about downsides right there.

Are you saying you didn't give up any land to your vassals? What did the tooltip say would happen upon accepting the offer?

I was actually on the flip side of this issue in a recent playthrough as a vassal count. My liege was always out of money and once in a while I'd get an event implying that I could give him money in exchange for more land. Suffice it to say, whenever I accepted, I'd be out ~200 gold and... stuck standing there with my one-county title in my hands. Nothing else ever came of these events, and I couldn't find any documentation on what exactly is supposed to happen. Kinda sucks to waste that much money on absolutely nothing when you're a lowly count trying to fabricate claims and so on.

Well, I had another time the same type of event, but this time I was supposed to actually give land (a county), which I didn't do. But I also had the event saying I could ask my vassal for money, so I guess there are three events there, but if you're really negative in gold, it does seem to resolve quite quickly (but then again, maybe this is due to the fact that I'm well liked and powerfull enough...?)

Pretty sure this needs to be reported as a bug... this event used to operate properly with them giving you gold but getting the land in return.

Every time I do the math on this event it's bad in the long run. 10 years of -50% taxes is NEVER more than they offer to pay you in my experience. Maybe if you're tribal - but it only seems to fire on a Castle holding, not tribal or city.

Think of it as a loan - big upfront payment but you're losing in the long run. Could be worth it if you're going to invest that money into something like a new city for taxes.

Think of it as a loan - big upfront payment but you're losing in the long run. Could be worth it if you're going to invest that money into something like a new city for taxes.

It's almost always a good choice in my experience. The reduced taxes only applies to one county and only to city holdings so if you only have one poorly developed city in the county it's likely you will get more money.
