I keep getting battered.

Hi all!

I'm a real novice when it comes to EUIV.........I'm a long time CK2 player, but have come over to the dark side, and am loving it. The problem is:

I'm playing as France, and have reconquered most of my cores, when all of a sudden Aragon (who is half the size of me) decides to declare war, and absolutely batters me. Every time I engage, I am annihilated :/ Even when I've got more troops than them , I lose. What the hell is going on?

- Are your generals worse than theirs?
- Are you attacking them on unfavourable terrain and taking terrain and river-crossing penalties as a result?
- Do you have more cavalry than infantry in your armies?
- Have you fallen behind in Military Technology?

Hey,

It's usually the Big Blue Blob giving everyone trouble for the other reason but it is daunting at times, I'm still beaten and try to work out why but:

Were you attacking them in their northern mountainous region? Terrain can have a huge impact on battles and an old trick is to lure armies into Mountains and cause huge attrition. Other than that, make sure you have Generals leading armies in every battle if possible. Army maintenance, was that at full? Alot of variables so if you provide more info then great.

Take into mind where you're attacking. If you're fighting Aragon, you're likely attempting to fight them in the mountainous border provinces. Never attack there, only defend. A good tactic is to find a mountain province, park a tiny stack there of maybe six divisions and allow Aragon to attack you only for big stack to come to their rescue.

Really, the only considerations other than troop strength to take into account when fighting is purely the quality of your generals (more pips the better) and whose on the offensive and where.

Also, the battles in EUIV on speed 3 seem to take much longer than battles on CK2 on speed 3, so massive armies seem to sneak up on me......I'm fighting a 15 unit army, then all of a sudden it's a 42 unit stack :/

I'm an imperial master on CK2!!!!!!!........this just doesn't feel right! I'm getting bashed, big time lol.

I sympathise. I played my first game of EUIV this September, and picked France, expecting an easyish ride. Then Burgundy tore me to pieces.

42 should be less than Your whole army. Don't divide Your forces too much, unless You have good reason. Make 2 stacks, keep them close together, avoid attacking in mountains/ovver river. Just move them onto Aragon, and whenever one is attack move the other one to reinforce.
Also, AI is kinda chicken, so if they DoWs You thats bad. What is the strnght of both alliances?

Are you attacking into bad terrain?

This may be a stupid question, but is ai bonuses on and the difficulty the easiest one? Also, are you playing ironman, if so dont for your first few games.

You must have forgotten to adjust your maintenance or something there simply is no other way of getting your ass handed to you consistently as France.

Use the "simple terrain" mapmode to see where the mountains are.

The only way we're going to get to the bottom of this is if you post a screenshot of a battle. Not the after-battle report, but the screen you get when you select an army in combat.

Also are you playing a mod for example if your using Veritas et Fortutido your French infantry is going to suck for about the first 30 years of the game

Combat is rough to learn for a CK2 player, where combat is just "take large army; bash against smaller army."

Or just "Take retinue/mercenary/Holy Order; bash against anything that isn't a retinue/mercenary/Holy Order, which is basically pretty much everything." EUIV's combat really is a step up in terms of all the different things you need to consider.

Also sounds like aragon are massing their armies too. When battes drag out AI try to gather their troops AS this boost their morale during battle. So you Might start fighting 15k stack, but then they sharm the battle. Attacking in the mountains with AI during this Can be devastating.

Being offensive at beginnig of a war is rarely the Best solution.

Did you upgrade your units? Did you maximize army maintenance? Generals? Did you have any negative modifier to morale etc. active?
